REPAIR CH&PP COAL CAR SHAKER

EIELSON AFB, ALASKA

PROJECT: FTQW 11-1005

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS ASSESSMENT REPORT

Design Alaska, Inc. Page 1 of 7

SCOPE OF INVESTIGATION

This Hazardous Materials Assessment Report was prepared by Design Alaska, Inc. under contract with the 354th Contracting Squadron. In this survey, we examined the lead content of coatings on steel structures with a Niton XL Spectrum Analyzer Model 303A Series. The presence of Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM) was not investigated due to ACM like materials not being in the area. If during future stages of design, suspect areas are identified, they will be sampled and included in project documents.

SUMMARY RESULTS

Testing for Lead Based Paint (LBP) was performed on Wednesday, November 12, 2014, by Kari Pile.

Testing occurred in areas that will be affected by work to repair the coal car shaker in the coal car unloading shelter.

Positive results were found on steel structures that support the catwalk and trolley which are proposed to be altered by this project. It is assumed that these structures date to original construction of the plant.

Negative results were found at the supports for the conveyor and above the stairs. The following photos depict typical testing locations and results.

Dust Wipe Samples were collected on January 30, 2015 by Kari Pile. Testing occurred at structural beam near stair/platform work and near support beam for the coal car shaker. See attached for heavy metal content in work area. Contractor shall use safe work practices when disturbing coal dust.

RECOMMENDATIONS

All disturbances of LBP materials should be conducted with lead safe work practices conforming to OSHA requirements in 29 CFR 1910.1025 and 29 CFR 1926.62.

Where possible, materials should be removed without cutting and transported to an approved landfill.

Where cutting is necessary, the paint on the area to be cut should be removed with a chemical stripper prior to any sanding, cutting or other abrading operations performed on these areas.

Design documents will include Specification Section 01 14 00 Safety, Environmental Protection, Regulations and Codes to further regulate treatment of LBP.
