FULL ANNOUNCEMENT
I. Funding Opportunity Description
Program Overview and Priorities
This FOA is for continuing of an existing award.
The DHS Directorate of Science and Technology (S&T) is tasked with research and organizing the scientific, engineering, and technological resources of the United States and leveraging these existing resources into technological tools to help protect the homeland. DHS S&T is committed to protecting the Homeland, its infrastructure, and citizens from threats including those presented by violent extremists.
The grant will provide additional funding to the University of Maryland in order to continue integrating four terrorism databases—1) the Global Terrorism Database, 2) the American
Terrorism Study, 3) the Profiles of Perpetrators of Terrorism database, and 4) the Extremist Crime
Database—as well as geospatial and population-level data. The goal of this five-year project is to further scientific study of violent extremist threats to the United States by allowing for more robust and sophisticated analyses of trends in the behaviors, operations, and activities of violent extremists within the United States.
Describe the how the program addresses a priority area or areas implemented by Presidential
Policy Directive/PPD-8:
(Please refer to: http://www.dhs.gov/xabout/laws/gc_1215444247124.shtm)
PPD-8 is aimed at strengthening the security and resilience of the United States through systematic preparation for the threats that pose the greatest risk to the Nation and developing a system to allow the Nation to track the progress of our ability to build and improve the capabilities necessary to prevent, protect against, mitigate the effects of, respond to, and recover from these threats. This effort addresses this by creating an integrated database that will allow for more robust and sophisticated analyses of trends in the behaviors, operations, and activities of violent extremists within the United States.
