2.0 Background

The Forest Service, National Fleet Management Program, manages all specialized equipment including Fire Fleet to meet agency mission needs. Fire Equipment is purchased routinely once equipment or vehicles have reached their useful life.

Type 7 Slip-On Pumps are portable units carried on the rear of a fire prevention or patrol vehicle and often used in the Forest Service for fire Suppression. Forest Service firefighters, using Forest Service fire apparatus and equipment, respond to thousands of wildfires each year. Fire crews and engines fight fire on National Forest System land and/or provide assistance to other federal, tribal, state or local partners.

Forest Service wildland fire engines and prevention vehicles (with Type 7 slip-on pumps) carry special equipment to spray water and foam. Crews on these engines/prevention vehicles perform a variety of wildland fire tasks:

• Serve as initial attack

• Hold established perimeter on prescribed fires and wildfires

• Use water, foam and hand tools to put out fires and keep structures and vegetation from burning

• Patrol forests and grasslands for signs of wildfires
