About this file
This document details minimum specifications for a 2000-gallon de-icer truck for Fort Drum, specifying comprehensive technical requirements for the vehicle's hydraulic, spray, and tank systems. The specifications cover critical components including a three-section spray boom with independent hydraulic lift cylinders, non-metallic "raindrop" nozzles, a stainless steel tank with baffles, and specific chassis requirements such as a 275 diesel engine, 42,000-pound gross vehicle weight, air brakes, and a 174-inch wheelbase.
Key technical highlights include hydraulic systems designed for -40°F operation, engine-driven hydraulics, a 4-inch 600 GPM centrifugal pump, multiple warning and marker lights, and precise spray control mechanisms that maintain consistent application rates regardless of vehicle speed or transmission gear. The document also mandates specific materials like 304 stainless steel for tank construction, high-pressure hydraulic hoses, and requires training upon equipment delivery. The specifications are extremely detailed, covering everything from nozzle placement to fender design, indicating a comprehensive approach to procuring a specialized de-icing vehicle.

Minimum Specifications for De-Icer Truck
Must be equal to or exceed 2000 gallon De-icer unit mounted on suitable chassis
1. General: 2000 gallon De-icer unit mounted on a chassis. All equipment must be operated from in cab, including application rate, movement of booms, and opening and closing of spray nozzles. Spray boom is in three sections and nozzles in each section may be operated independent of other sections.
2. Spray Boom: Constructed of high tensile, 1-inch tubing in a triangular design for maximum strength to weight ratio. Boom wings to break-back to prevent damage in the event of striking an object. Booms rear mounted consisting of one adjustable center section and two swing out sections. Each boom swing-out section shall have a hydraulic lift cylinder installed to facilitate raising and lowering of that section independent of other sections of boom assembly. Nozzles located on 30 inch centers. Both wings to be folded along side of vehicle independently to facilitate ease in storing or spraying in close areas. Spray swath must be minimum of 50 feet.
3. Lights: Each boom wing shall have at a minimum 3 marker lights. One should be located near the end of boom so operator can maintain visual contact at night or in hazy conditions.
A spotlight shall be located in a manner to illuminate boom spray area for each boom. Two adjustable lights to be mounted on rear head of tank.
4. Warning Lights: Two amber 360 degree coverage beacon lights, one in-stalled on boom transport rack so it is higher than top of tank. The other beacon shall be located on top of center section at rear of unit.
5. Operation of Boom: In-cab, hydraulic controls must be able to function in any mode and independent of engine RPM, gear ratio, speed, or direction of travel.
6. Liquid Calibration and Control System: Sprayer control system will automatically maintain a predetermined application rate regardless of vehicle speed, gear selection, oil viscosity, or various other inefficiencies inherent to liquid application system.
7. Hydraulic Source: Hydraulics to be engine driven. No electric or auxiliary motors.
Hydraulic fluid to meet military specification for -40 (Fahrenheit) degree weather operation. Controls to be installed so hydraulic oil lines do not enter the cab area.
8. Hydraulic Disengage: Provision to disengage hydraulic pump must be provided
9. Valve Bank: Multiple section control valve bank for operation of booms and shut-off valves must be located outside of vehicle cab.
10. Hydraulic Pump: Axial piston pump variable displacement pump with pressure compensator.
11. Hydraulic Motor: Axial piston motor model variable displacement motor with pressure compensator.
12. Hydraulic Oil: Must be a premium quality 5W-20 multiviscosity hydraulic fluid. It must offer superior low temperature characteristics while insuring higher temperature reliability
Page 2 of4 also. Must pass the Vickers 105C Vane pump test (ASTMD-2882).
13. Hydraulic Hose: All hoses used in the hydraulic system shall be high pressure type compatible to system pressure and flow requirements. Material composition to be non-corrosive and suitable for -40 (Fahrenheit) degree operation. All hoses shall be adequately supported and protected against friction and abrasion.
14. Condition: Hydraulic system with a flexible rubber hose, located closer than 6 inches to the exhaust system be acceptable.
15. Hydraulic Fittings: All hydraulic fittings used in the hydraulic system shall be extra strength, heavy wall, high pressure type. .
16. Pump: 4-inch, 600 GPM at 50 PSI, single station, centrifugal pump capable of gallonage to meet flusher requirement and/or flexible enough to handle de-icer product.
17. Fittings: To be sized in accordance with pump capability and free of any restriction which limits flow requirement.
18. Manual Valves: All butterfly, gate, and shut-off valves to be of good quality, easily repairable, and corrosion resistant to all products standard in de-icing operations
19. Hydraulic Valves: All ball valves and in-cab controlled valves must be able to operate in
-40'F weather with minimum delay times and sized for maximum flows.
20. Manifold: Product constructed of Stainless Steel. Pressure side of manifold must be at least 3 inch also Stainless Steel. Manifold must be designed to allow pumping system to be used in loading or unloading tank while in stationary position. Ability to drain unit quickly and without power must also be part of manifold design.
21. Piping: Combination of steel, stainless, and high pressure rated EPDM wire reinforced rubber hose for -40 (Fahrenheit) degree operation
22. Nozzles - De-Icing: Nozzles must be non-metallic "raindrop" sized, to provide adequate application rate and designed to prevent drifting in high winds. Located on 30-inch centers and height from 20 to 24 inches above ground plain. Nozzles must be quick-lock type to allow quick removal and replacement.
23. Nozzles Checks: Check valves must be located on each nozzle to eliminate dripping of material when nozzles are shut-off.
24. Liquid De-Icing Distribution: Liquid sprayer control system shall provide automatic synchronization of the application rate of liquid product regardless of speed, transmission gear selection, or any inefficiency common to most liquid product spraying systems.: The rate of application shall be equal at all nozzles over entire length of spray boom.
25. Tank Configuration and Material: 2000 U.S. Gallon Tank. One compartment with two 12-gauge stainless, flanged baffles. Heads 12-gauge with dished and flange weld area.
Tank thickness 12-gauge. All 304 stainless steel material.
26. Ladder: Street side at front of tank and extend from top of tank to no lower than center line of axles.
27. Manhole: 16-inch manhole with 10-inch filler cap, low profile with quick release
Page 3 of4 clamp.
28. Sight Gauge: Located street side to extend from top to bottom of tank with stainless steel capacity chart calibrated in 500 gallon intervals, located approximately 24 inches from front weld seam of tank.
29. Sills and Subframe: 8-gauge, 304 stainless steel. All backup, end caps, and reinforcement plates to be 304 stainless.
30. Sump: Stainless steel tapered to rear at rear head seam of tank with one 4-inch withdrawal spud facing to the rear. To be constructed so no "Vortexing" and 'Whirlpooling" action takes place in maximum pumping conditions.
31. Fenders: Fenders should cover rear tires of vehicle and be sufficient size to prevent tires from throwing spray onto tank of vehicle. Mudflaps both in front of and behind tires.
Fender material should be non-corrosive and lightweight.
32. Paint: Equipment will be powder coated to match as closely to the truck color as possible. Tank may be natural stainless 304B finish.
