Bureau of Land Management Tucson Field Office Fencing Statement of Work

Introduction This Statement of Work is to allocate funds towards the purchase of barbed wire fencing materials for use in and around the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area (SPRNCA), Las Cienegas National Conservation Area (LCNCA), Ironwood Forest National Monument (IFNM) and other areas in the Tucson Field Office (TFO). TFO has multiple, substantial fencing needs across the SPRNCA, LCNCA, and other areas related to both authorized and unauthorized grazing. The purchase of these materials will help to support achievement of Public Law 100-696 that requires the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to protect, conserve, and enhance the riparian area and the aquatic, wildlife, archaeological, paleontological, scientific, cultural, educational, and recreational resources particularly along riparian area associated with the San Pedro River, Gila River and Cienegas Creek.

Much of the fencing in TFO has been in place beyond its lifespan. Additionally, innumerable water gaps or drainages are at risk annually for damage during high flow rain events. Between these two issues, plus recreation users cutting fences, the BLM frequently responds to unauthorized cattle, especially in riparian areas. The BLM is working to develop cooperative agreements with adjacent landowners and leasees to assist in the maintenance of fences and ensure proper coordination and identification of maintenance responsibilities of fences.

Description Barbed wire fencing materials will support the construction of about 9 miles in total.
