About this file

This Statement of Work outlines requirements for the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) to purchase two scalar quantum/atomic magnetometers with vector sensing capabilities for magnetic anomaly navigation (magnav) education and research. The equipment will be used to teach AFIT students and DoD personnel about magnav technology as an alternative to GPS-based navigation.

The specific requirements include two QuSpin Gen-2.0 QTFM sensors with vector add-ons, advanced communications boards, and carbon fiber cases for both the sensors and comms boards. The magnetometers must have less than 1nT measurement error and include external magnetic field generation capability in three axes, with the ability to control the field generation hardware and combine measurements to generate full magnetic vector measurements. Delivery is required within 60 days of purchase order submission. The contract opportunity is being pursued as a sole-source procurement with QuSpin, Inc., as they are identified as the only capable source for meeting these specifications.

STATEMENT OF WORK

Combined Scalar/Vector Atomic Magnetometer

11 July 2024

1.0. BACKGROUND: The Autonomy & Navigation Technology (ANT) Center located at the Air Force Institute of Technology is a world-wide leader in both satellite and complementary navigation technologies. One technology in particular, magnetic anomaly navigation (magnav), has become of great interest to the Department of Defense as an alternative to GPS-based navigation. In an effort to educate AFIT students in this new technology, having access to the high-quality sensors required to perform magnav to learn how to characterize and work with these sensors is essential to the education of AFIT students and other DoD personnel taking magnav classes at AFIT.

2.0. SCOPE: AFIT has the requirement to purchase two scalar quantum/atomic magnetometers with vector sensing add-ons (where the vector sensor is created using a quantum scalar sensor plus some active magnetic field generating components) to allow students to use and characterize these sensors.

3.0. REQUIREMENTS: The contractor shall provide the following

* A scalar magnetometer with less than 1nT of measurement error

* External magnetic field generation, in three axes, enabling measurement of field variation with added field

* Capability to control external field generation hardware

* Capability to combine sensor measurements with and without external field addition to generate full magnetic vector measurement

This requirement can be met with:

2x of QuSpin’s Gen-2.0 QTFM sensor plus + 2x Vector Add-on + 2x Advanced Comms board + 2x carbon fiber case for the QTFM sensor + 2x Carbon fiber case for the advanced comms board + shipping

4.0. Period of Performance: The Government requires delivery of the sensors within 60 days of the purchase order being submitted.
