Part 3 – Description/Specifications

3.1 Background

The Division of Pharmaceutical Analysis (DPA) acquired an Erweka chewing gum tester with three testing stations in 2014 to advance the ability to conduct dissolution testing for special drug dosage forms like medicated chewing gum. Dissolution testing is widely used for product development, quality control, and research studies throughout the pharmaceutical industry.

The Erweka DRT-3 chewing gum dissolution tester is designed to masticate chewing gums, especially medicated ones, and measure the in vitro release of substances from the samples into a surrounding liquid medium.

Acquisition of the upgrade to DRT-3 chewing gum instrument will enable the in vitro characterization of abuse-deterrent opioid formulations designed to deter abuse by chewing. These formulations are difficult to masticate due to increased tablet hardness. To adequately characterize the abuse-deterrent properties of these formulations it is required to monitor the forces exerted on the tablets during the chewing process. In the existing configuration 2 out of 3 chewing cells are equipped with the pressure control and torque monitoring (PTM) accessory which allows to monitor PTM and enables the mastications of formulations with high mechanical strength. The PTM accessory is controlled by the Almemo Control Software. With the existing software version pressure control, monitoring and torque monitoring is limited to a single channel (i.e., chewing cell) per experiment. The request comprises of a software update that enables to simultaneously control the two chewing cells that are equipped with the PTM accessory. The request further comprises of an accessory for the third chewing cell that is not equipped with the PTM accessory to enable the mastication of formulations with high mechanical strength.

3.2 Statement of Work
