STATEMENT OF NEED FOR SUPPLY
PURPOSE:
One of NOAA’s new strategies to apply emerging technologies to science is Unmanned Systems (UxS).
SWFSC has been the major pathfinder in using Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) to provide essential data for management of protected species (e.g., Goebel et al. 2015, Durban et al. 2015, Krause et al. 2017, Christiansen et al. 2020). Since 2012, the Center has been offering biannual UAS training workshops to
NMFS scientists from around the country. As UAS become a standard tool for data collection, small boat-based UAS missions will become more common in the near future. Consequently, we need to add boat-based training to our training workshops. However, SWFSC currently lacks an appropriate boat for UAS training. MMTD needs to purchase a small boat for UAS/UxS training, project/task feasibility scoping, and mission readiness.
The training vessel will be maintained by the Marine Mammal and Turtle Division (MMTD) but will be available for UxS training across Divisions at the Center. We believe that the vessel can be used for training sessions for small Unmanned Marine Systems in the future, as well as the ongoing biannual UAS training workshops.
