FAA Technical Specifications for Radio Frequency Generators
The Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Satellite Navigation Branch (ANG-E54) has a requirement for a Radio Frequency Generators for testing Identification, Friend or Foe (IFF) systems in high-density signal environments. Any interested contractor must provide a Radio Frequency Generator for IFF Systems that meets or exceeds the minimum specifications listed below.
1. One (1) Radio Frequency Generator for Testing Identification, Friend or Foe system
a. High-Density Signal Environment
i. Supports test scenarios with up to 400 independent IFF platforms
1. Up to 25 in-beam Mode 5 replies
2. Up to 8 simultaneous garbled signals
b. Independent Signal Control
i. Provides all Mark XIIA modes, including 1, 2, 3/A, C, S, 4, and 5; ADSB and M5L2
- Interface for KIV-77 cryptographic equipment
c. Dynamic RF Environment –
i. Simulation of dynamic platforms and realistic RF environments accounting for path loss, antenna patterns, and delay.
d. Design IFF System Assurance
i. Ensures IFF systems are working correctly
ii. Facilitates seamless Mode 5 and Mode S system integration
e. INTERROGATION GENERATION
i. Modes Supported 1, 2, 3/A, C, 4, S, and 5
ii. Frequency 1030 MHz
iii. Amplitude -90 to +6 dBm
iv. PGRI 10 to 2.5 ms
f. INTERROGATION RECEPTION
i. Modes Supported 1, 2, 3/A, C, 4, S, and 5
ii. Frequency 1030 MHz
iii. Amplitude +15 to +65 dBm
g. SCENARIO FEATURES
i. Up to 50 moving IFF platforms
ii. 6 degrees of freedom (latitude, longitude, altitude, heading, pitch, roll)
iii. Transmit/receive antenna patterns
iv. Realistic RF environment accounting for path loss and pointing angles
v. Elementary surveillance (ELS) and enhanced surveillance (EHS)
h. TRANSPONDER GENERATION
i. Modes Supported 1, 2, 3/A, C, 4, S, M5L1, M5L2, M5L2-B, ADS-B, ELS and EHS
ii. Frequency 1090 MHz

i. TRANSPONDER RECEPTION
i. Modes Supported 1, 2, 3/A, C, 4, S, M5L1, M5L2, M5L2-B, ADS-B, ELS and EHS
ii. Frequency 1090 MHz
iii. Amplitude +15 to +65 dBm
j. Provide Sum and Difference channels to support mono-pulse tracking interrogator test.
k. Overlapping Pulse Groups
i. Up to 32 pulses that overlap in time will accurately garble at RF, producing mathematically correct constructive and destructive interference, without clipping.
l. Independent Interrogation
i. Power Levels Up to 50 emitters with independent power settings.
ii. Up to 50 emitters with independent interrogation rates, with optional random start times to each emitter's signal pattern, plus optional jitter within each pattern.
iii. Freedom to control timing of all interrogations to create arbitrary patterns of mixed interrogation modes and parameters. Requires multiple emitters on a single platform to generate complex interleaved interrogation patterns.
m. Replies
i. User can define sectors relative to the nose of the System Under Test to optionally suppress replies from certain angles.
n. One (1) Week of Training for six (6) Participants
o. Annual Software Subscription
