About this file
This document is a Questions and Answers (Q&A) file for a Department of Air Force Materiel Command Nuclear Weapons Center solicitation (FA9401-25-Q-0013) for high-power coaxial cables. The Q&A clarifies technical specifications for cable requirements, including electrical and mechanical characteristics. Specific electrical requirements include transmitting RF signals between 800-2000 MHz, handling power levels from 1500-3300 watts across different frequencies, and maintaining maximum line loss of 4.3 dB/100ft. Mechanical requirements specify a minimum bend radius of 2.75 inches, heat shrink connector protection, and ability to operate in extreme temperatures from -55°C to 200°C.
The document details precise connector specifications and quantities needed, including 7/16 DIN and N-type connectors in various female/male configurations and different cable lengths (10', 35', 75'). The total connector quantities range from 8-20 units per type, with an outdoor IP67 weatherproof rating requirement. The Q&A responds to vendor inquiries about power handling capabilities of different connector types, with N-type connectors specified to handle 500W max and 300W sustained power, and 7/16 DIN connectors required to match cable frequency and power transmission characteristics.

Question and Answers:
Q1: Do you have a coaxial Cable spec you want us to use? For example LMR400?
A1: We have identified SFT-600s as being able to fulfill the requirements we have provided, if you want to share that with the vendors. We will accept other cables as long as they can also fulfill the requirements.
Q2: I’m reaching out to you with some questions from our vendor regarding the coaxial cables we are currently evaluating. Based on the information you have provided; they’ve raised concerns about the power handling capabilities. Specifically, they mentioned that you are looking to support an average power level of 2kW at 2000MHz and have found a suitable cable solution that can support this power. However, they are questioning whether the Type N and 7/16 DIN interfaces will be able to handle this level of power.
Could you kindly provide some clarification on whether these interfaces are indeed capable of handling the required power levels, or if there might be a misunderstanding in the power handling requirements?
A2: I see where the confusion comes from. I have reworded the requirements from the statement of need and attached the new version. I’ve also copied the new requirements below with the changes highlighted.
• Electrical o Cables must be able to transmit 800-2000 MHz RF signal.
o Cables must be able to transmit 1575.42 MHz signal to at least 1500 watts.
o Cables be able to transmit 1227.6 MHz signal to at least 1500 watts.
o Cables be able to handle 3300W max and 2000W sustained power o Maximum line loss throughout cable cannot exceed 4.3 dB/100ft, not including connectors.
o 7/16 DIN connectors must be able to pass the same frequencies at the same power levels of the cables.
o N-type connectors must be able to handle 500W max and 300W sustained power.
• Mechanical o Min bend radius of 2.75 in o Connectors on the cable must have heat shrink to help protect against weather and strain o Connector Types and Quantities Needed
7/16 DIN Female to 7/16 DIN Female (QTY 10)
7/16 DIN Female to N-type Female (QTY 10)
7/16 DIN Male to 7/16 DIN Male (QTY 10)
7/16 Female DIN to 7/16 DIN Male (QTY 10) o Must be able to operate in extreme conditions –55C-200C o Must be weatherproof sealed with an outdoor rating of IP 67\ o Cable Lengths and Quantities Needed
10’ assembly 7/16 DIN (QTY 10)
35’ assembly 7/16 DIN (QTY 20)
10’ assembly N-type (QTY 20)
75’ assembly 7/16 DIN (QTY 8)
I added cables into the beginning of those requirements in the electrical section just for clarification.
I reworded the connector section and split them up with their own requirements as well.
I think these updates should clear the concerns with the vendors.
