About this file
This technical specification sheet outlines requirements for pulsed low light level scientific cameras. The government seeks to replace existing cameras no longer manufactured with 10 new cameras capable of equivalent or improved image quality and environmental survivability. Minimum technical requirements include operating in dry air up to 60°C at 0.1-2.0 bar, fitting within mounting clearances of no larger than a Phantom v1211 camera body, acquiring images through summation of 30-microsecond exposures triggered at 600-microsecond intervals corresponding to 5-100 photon signals per pixel, utilizing a true global shutter under 5 microseconds with less than 0.5-microsecond trigger jitter, and providing 1-megapixel or higher spatial resolution with a minimum 50 SNR and 10-bit effective bit depth. The related federal contract opportunity is pre-solicitation number FA9101-CAM from the Department of the Air Force Materiel Command Test Center for cameras meeting the outlined specifications.

Technical Specification Sheet I. Background It is the intent of the Government to replace its scientific cameras used for the acquisition of pulsed low light level data. The cameras currently in use rely on a unique CCD chip design that is no longer manufactured. The objective of the Pulsed Acquisition Camera Replacement is to provide current generation cameras for the collection of pulsed low light level data.
Specifically, the Government requires a quantity of 10 Cameras that can acquire equivalent image quality to the current capability and that can survive the environmental conditions in the environment where they will be used. The expanded goal is to provide scientific cameras with increased performance to increase the throughput of current measurement techniques.
II. Minimum Technical Requirements The following is a list of the critical technical specifications required to meet this requirement.
1. The Camera shall operate in an environment which is:
1.1. Dry (non-condensing) air conditions up to 140 F (60 C) in the pressure range of 200 to 4000 psf (0.1 to 2.0 bar); and
1.2. Camera body must reasonably sized to fit within allowed mounting clearances (e.g. no larger than Phantom v1211)
2. The Camera shall acquire a resulting image that is a summation of individual exposures.
2.1. Each individual low level light pulse is an exposure of 30 microseconds, with a repetition period of 600 microseconds;
2.2. The resulting image is a summation of multiple exposures of the same repeatedly-pulsed low level light event;
2.3. Each low-level light event corresponds to an illumination level of approximately 5 to 100 photons per pixel per exposure;
2.4. The range of minimum to maximum signal in any image is at most 5x (excluding background);
2.5. Each exposure requires a true global shutter with better than 5 microsecond open/close time; and
2.6. Each exposure requires synchronization to an external trigger signal with better than 0.5 microsecond jitter.
3. The Camera shall acquire equivalent (or better) image quality compared to the existing system.
3.1. The minimum effective image spatial resolution is 1 megapixel (1024 x 1024);
3.2. The minimum SNR for the signal portion of the resulting image is 50 (excluding background); and
3.3. The minimum effective bit depth of the resulting image is 10 bit.
