About this file
This document contains questions and answers related to a federal contract opportunity for eight 8-inch gimbal expansion joints and eight 8-inch hinge expansion joints. The opportunity is solicitation number FA9101-22-Q-0003 from the Department of the Air Force Materiel Command Test Center, with items to be furnished no later than 60 days after receipt of order.
The questions and answers indicate issues with the specifications as currently written. The contractor calculates that the expansion joints and flow speeds specified would not meet EJMA standards for safety and cycle life. Materials specified also may not meet stress requirements. The contractor requests confirmation to use Alloy 625 grade 2 materials and increase joint lengths within minimal allowable amounts to achieve an EJMA-compliant design. Information is also requested on insulation thickness and properties to meet the 1250 degree Fahrenheit design temperature.

Questions Answers
1. Our calculations show that the expansion joints requested per the spec sheets are not strong enough to withstand the design conditions. What code or standard was used to develop these specifications?
We are supplying the conditions to be encountered in the piping system.
2. Our manufacturing process calculations are governed by current standards set forth by EJMA. Potentially, a percent of a yield is used on your end as a design standard. Our calculations show the specified designs will not permit a predictable design for safety and cycle life per current EJMA standards. Is it possible you are using a different set of expansion joint design standards/calculations? We need your instructions to either support the industry standard EJMA standards, the specifications, or meet to discuss the issues. Please advise, also including the comments below. Note: our priorities are safety and reliability Please provide additional information regarding how our design requirements conflict with
EJMA design standards.
3. We calculate the flow speed of 10,147 ft/sec. to be hypersonic; requiring special liner and bellows configurations. We must offer an oversized bellows design with a straight-through pipe style liner. Please confirm the flow rate.
60 lbs/sec at 1230 psi and 1100 F in an 8” Sch 160 (0.906” wall) pipe? Please check calculations
4. The design temperature is 1250°F. Understanding the outside temperature is ambient, an external insulation blanket is needed. Because this is provided by others per the data sheet, what is the thickness of the blanket, the insulation rating, and density?
Fiberglass, ESLIN Needle-Mat Felt Material – EG-Felt type 12T (15/32”) THK.
5. Per our current EJMA calculations. To meet spring rate and cycle life concurrently, the overall length will need to increase. The oversized bellows requirement also forces a length increase.
Minimal increase in length is allowable. What magnitude of increase is needed?
6. Most of the materials will be required to be Inconel 625 grade 2, as many components of the design will be too stressed if stainless steel is used. Please confirm if Inconel 625 grade 2 is acceptable for materials.
Please indicate which components that may be over-stressed.
7. We are confident safe designs can be provided for the application. We also respect the specification statement “no exception are allowed”. Please confirm we can increase lengths and use Alloy 625 grade 2 materials. Please also provide the insulation properties. Minimal increase in length is allowable. What magnitude of increase is needed? Please indicate which components that may be over-stressed.
