1. SCOPE

1.1. This specification establishes the design, performance, manufacture, testing and acceptance requirements for a set of Liquid Nitrogen (LN2) Booster Pumps for the Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC) Tunnel 9 located at 10905 New Hampshire Ave. Silver Spring, MD 20903-1050.

1.2. Background: The AEDC Tunnel 9 in White Oak, MD has a nitrogen supply system (drawing 07-1057 Rev. A) to provide high pressure gaseous nitrogen to the facility. This system is supplied by a 13,000 gallon LN2 tank. A booster pump is used to pump LN2 from the liquid tank to a pressure of 150 psig. The booster pump supplies LN2 to a high pressure liquid pump which pumps the LN2 through a vaporizer to a pressure of approximately 15,000 psi. Currently, there are two sets of LN2 booster pump/high pressure liquid pump/vaporizer systems that operate independently. The operation of each system is alternated each time the facility is operated. The current LN2 booster pumps are old and replacement components are no longer available. These pumps need to be removed and replaced with new LN2 booster pumps with equivalent performance specifications to assure system reliability.

3. REQUIREMENTS

3.1. General: The contractor shall supply an LN2 Booster Pump assembly (electric motor/gearbox/impeller) that at minimum meets the specifications outline below and in Appendix A – LN2 Booster Pump General Requirements.

3.1.1. Environment: Unit will be installed exterior of the building and exposed to the outside environment and elements. The unit will must be able to reliably operate in this environment. The electric motor shall at a minimum meet NEMA IP54 protection standards. If the electric motor is equipped with a variable frequency

Page-2 drive (VFD), the VFD shall be enclosed in an enclosure that at a minimum meets NEMA Type 3S standards.

3.1.2. Duty Cycle: The unit must be able to operator on a continuous duty cycle.

3.1.3. Fluid: The unit must be able to pump liquid nitrogen.

3.1.4. Footprint: The footprint of the existing LN2 booster pump unit is 28 in long (from the inlet flange to the end of the electric motor) and 20 in wide. The new unit must be able to fit within the footprint of the existing booster pump unit.

3.1.5. Suggested product: ACD AC-14 1x2x4.5 Centrifugal Pump 55645-XXXXXD or approved equal.

3.1.6. Shipment: The contractor shall ship the LN2 Booster Pump assembly to AEDC Tunnel 9 at 10905 New Hampshire Ave., Silver Spring, MD 20903-1050.

4. Verification

4.1. Test and Demonstration: The contractor shall perform a functional test of the LN2

Booster Pump in LN2 at the design conditions. The contractor shall provide a certificate of test for each LN2 Booster Pump assembly prior to shipment.

5. PACKAGING

5.1. Preparation for Delivery: Contractor shall provide all preservation, packaging, and packing to ensure safe delivery of valve assembly and related components to AEDC.

5.2. Post-Delivery Storage: Contractor shall provide all preservation, packaging, and packing shall be such that the Booster Pump assembly and related components can be stored on a pallet outdoors and sustain no damage from rain, sleet, snow, hail and other environmental conditions.
