Variable Electric Power Pack/High Power Rectifier System
Questions and Answers 9 September 2009
1. We are going to quote a DC power supply, do you require pf correction? Also do you have a THD requirement for the AC side?
The power supply is to be installed in Silver Spring, Maryland where the electric utility provider is Potomac Electric Power Company (PEPCO). We have an inquiry in with PEPCO but have not yet heard back from them. We don’t have much experience in this area as we don’t operate any SCR type equipment.
2. The pf on a rectifier is not bad at full load, about .9 but when you run down in the lower voltage and current ratings the power factor could drop to .5 the other consideration is the percentage of load that this rectifier is compared to your total energy use, if it's on the small side then there should be no concern, but if it's the biggest piece of equipment then that's different.
We would not be operating the power supply for any significant length of time at low voltage & current. We would be moving up & down to/from full power as quickly as the equipment will safely allow.
This power supply will be a small fraction of the total energy use on the site.
3. As far as THD we are going to provide you with a 12 pulse rectifier which is better than a 6 pulse, typical THD on a 12 pulse is 12% as compared to 30% on a 6 pulse so I think you are ok with this but just wanted to ask?
Again, we don’t have much experience with SCR type equipment here so until we get a response from PEPCO we don’t have any specific comment. We understand that the 12-pulse unit would tend to generate less harmonic distortion than the 6-pulse unit. I’m assuming that PEPCO’s THD criteria will be similar to other area utility companies where you may have provided equipment and they will recommend and/or require that some filtering/buffering equipment also be utilized.
