Q: The sequencing and content of the SOO lines of effort suggest algorithm, system, and software development integrated and tested in the lab; then integrated, deployed, and tested on one or more small UAS; and finally integrated into larger demonstrations including OCONUS work.

a. Is the above synthesis correct?

A: The MASS Contract is not exclusively or explicitly focused on technologies for integration into one or more collaborating small UASs. From the Illustrated Q&A: “Boxes (A-J) surrounding the central figure indicate research areas which will, by parts, enhance or enable one or more INPUT/INFERERENCE/IMPLICATION capabilities. These are not anticipated to mature at equal paces into an integrated whole under the MASS contract. Experimentation with individual components alone or appropriately coupled is desired.”

R&D in maturing input/inference/implication (prediction) capabilities is what is sought, and platform agnostic capabilities which can demonstrate scalability to demonstration venues ranging from hybrid multi-cloud to edge platforms are desired.

Ultimately, relevant, matured algorithms, components, or capabilities may be offered as candidate solution subsystems for the referenced AFRL drivers. It is anticipated that any hardened integration into systems of record, particularly those involving airborne collaborating systems, will be scoped and executed under alternate contracts.

b. Are there one or more vignettes which guide the research through lab, small UAS, and larger scale integration, test, and demonstration? If so, can you share?

Notional operational vignettes range from small scale single object detection to wide area multi-object detection, tracking, custody maintenance and intent inferencing, in operating environments that range from benign to challenged to hostile.

Q: Is MASS tied to any of the SECAF Operational Imperatives? If so,

a. Can you say which ones? And,

b. To which AFLCMC OI-based programs does this map to?

A: AFRL’s MASS contract is not tied to any specific SECAF Operational Imperatives (OIs) or AFLCMC OI-based programs. MASS seeks a range of R&D efforts to conceive, identify, design, prototype, or demonstrate new mission autonomy-enabling capabilities which may be considered as candidate solution algorithms, components, or subsystems for proposed systems of record that may be responsive to one or more SECAF OI’s.
