About this file
This Statement of Work (SOW) details requirements for procuring Marx generator systems for high-power RF and triggering applications for the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The systems are intended for research into high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (EMP) effects, hardening electronics, testing component resilience, training pulsed power experts, and exploring plasma science concepts.
Specific technical requirements include two Marx generators: a 30-stage, 40-Ohm generator and a 15-stage, 50-Ohm generator, both with quick-disconnect high-voltage inputs and associated components like charge/trigger cables, output cable assembly, and a dummy load. A programmable logic controller (PLC)-based control platform is also required, capable of managing pressure, voltage, trigger, and pulse repetition frequency. The technical specifications mandate peak voltage ≥ 300 kV, peak current > 5 kA, peak power > 2 GW, and specific pulse characteristics. The period of performance calls for shipment and delivery 8 months after contract award, with the solicitation dated 25 April 2025.

STATEMENT OF WORK
Marx Generator for Pulsed Power, Plasma Science, and EMP Learning
25 April 2025
1.0. BACKGROUND: High altitude electromagnetic pulse (EMP) effects are a strategic concern as a nuclear detonation in space could severely hamper or destroy satellite constellations. Therefore, the U.S. is concerned with hardening electronics to protect and preserve our capabilities in a hostile environment. This equipment enables us to research these effects and test the resilience of electronics. Additionally, the U.S. utilizes pulsed power to test components. This system helps train future pulsed power experts and provides a platform to explore some plasma science concepts.
2.0. SCOPE: This SOW covers procuring and delivering Marx generator systems for high-power RF and triggering applications. Note that the Control Platform is required to control the Marx Generators adequately.
3.0. REQUIREMENTS: The contractor shall provide systems that, in general, have a peak voltage >= 300 kV, peak current > 5 kA, peak power > 2 GW, impedance < 60 Ohms, pulse rise time < 25 ns, FWHM < 50 ns. The following looks like what we need for the full suite of experimental testing:
3.1. Marx Generators
3.1.1. Compact 30-stage, 40-Ohm Marx generator with quick-disconnect high-voltage inputs, high-voltage output connection and gas lines.
3.1.2. Compact 15-stage, 50 Ohm Marx generator with quick-disconnect high-voltage inputs, high-voltage output connection and gas lines
3.1.3. Coaxial charge cable
3.1.4. Coaxial trigger cable
3.1.5. 20kOhm in-line coaxial charge resistor for power supply protection
3.1.6. Coaxial output cable assembly (25-ft) with diagnostics
3.1.7. Coaxial dummy load for verification of the Marx generator. Include quick-disconnect coaxial connection and T&M CVR for a calibrated measurement of the pulse.
3.2. Control Platform (IPCU-RRP-TT-E1)
3.2.1. Programmable logic controller (PLC)-based control platform for control of pressure, voltage, trigger, and PRF from either the local touch screen or a remote computer.
4.0. Period of Performance: Request shipment and delivery of items 8 months after contract award.
