Statement of Work for Fast Digital Oscilloscope Document Date: 13 Mar 2024
1. Scope: The measurement of short-lived nuclear events requires instrumentation with fast acquisition rates. Oscilloscopes currently available in the teaching and research laboratories in B470 do not offer the necessary bandwidth or sampling rate to capture the key characteristics associated with the output pulses of fast scintillation detectors such as BaF2, thus limiting our experimental and troubleshooting capabilities.
1.1 Background: The instrumentation in AFIT/ENP’s Nuclear Spectroscopy Laboratory is insufficient to measure key characteristics of our fast detector output pulses. These detectors produce waveforms with rise times of approximately 1 ns with corresponding transients of tens of ps, and this drives the requirement for oscilloscope bandwidth; substantial attenuation of the signal will result when measured with an instrument with a bandwidth less than 2 GHz. The minimum recommended sampling rate is thus 10 Gs/s, with higher sampling rates A fast oscilloscope will serve ENP’s current and future students and faculty across a wide range of teaching and research activities.
