Absolute Magnetic Anomaly Positioning (AMAP)

Phase 2 Flight Test Requirements

9 April 2015

Overview:

The Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) is conducting research on aerial navigation using the Earth’s magnetic anomaly field. A detailed data collect is required for validating the algorithms and methods under development. A flight test is required in which magnetic intensity data is recorded over a previously mapped area. To save costs AFIT will not be collecting any map data during the test flight -the contractor must provide the map data as part of the contract.

1. Company Nationality:

a. The contractor must be a U.S. company and the aircraft must be US Registry (N-numbered). This is required due to the need to put sensitive ITAR controlled equipment on the aircraft. (See Requirement 6)

2. Flight Location:

a. The location of the flight test must be in the continental US

b. The flight test must take place over an area of moderate to high spatial variation in the magnetic anomaly field. North and East gradients of greater than 5 nT/km are required to exist within the mapped area.

3. Provided Magnetic Map:

a. A high quality magnetic anomaly map must be provided by the contractor over the flight test area. The map may be provided free of charge from open sources or built into the total contract cost.

b. The survey area must be at least 400 square km

c. The map must be shown to be accurate to within 1-3nT

d. The map must have a height / line spacing ratio of greater than one-half.

e. The map data must be acquired at a constant barometric altitude of less than 1km.

Maps that are draped at a constant height above terrain are not acceptable

f. The map must contain high spatial variation (See 2b)

4. Flight Tests:

a. Two 1-hour continuous flight tests totaling at least 200 line-km must be conducted through the mapped region

i. The first flight will occur at the mapped altitude and include a varied flight path traversing the mapped area

ii. The second flight will spend 20 minutes at 3 separate increasing altitudes above the mapped region, not to exceed 4km.

b. The flights will collect magnetic intensity data from a Cesium Magnetometer

i. Data absolute accuracy must be better than 1-3nT

ii. Date rate must be 10Hz or higher

iii. Data must be time stamped with GPS Time

c. The flights will collect magnetic vector data

i. Absolute accuracy must be better than 30nT in each axis.

d. The flights will collect differential GPS data with accuracies of better than 1 meter

e. A magnetic base station with an accuracy of 1-3nT must be collecting data within the mapped region at a rate of 1Hz or greater.

5. Magnetic Compensation and Calibration:

a. The aircraft undergo a ground calibration

b. The aircraft must undergo an in-flight calibration using the vector magnetometers

6. Government provided Inertial Navigation System:

a. Contractor must be able to install a government provided LN-251 Inertial Navigation

System. Will require a GPS feed and 28 volt power.

b. Contractor must be able to install a laptop and run a simple script to command INS unit to initiate data collect

7. Time of data collect:

a. Data collect must occur at least 6 months but no more than 12 months after award of contract to allow time for the planning and integration of the government provided INS

8. Data Rights:

a. Full access to all raw data from all sensors
