About this file
This is a Sources Sought synopsis for in-depth technical assessment and analysis of Line Replaceable Units (LRUs) on the B-52H Weapon System platform. The U.S. Air Force, through AFLCMC/WBK, is conducting market research to identify potential contractors capable of providing engineering analysis, failure analysis, testing, and recommendations to address material availability constraints, diminishing manufacturing sources (DMS), obsolescence risks, and long-term viability of five critical electrical system components and fifteen thermal control system components listed in Table 1.
The contractor shall perform comprehensive technical assessments including failure investigations, obsolescence studies, feasibility studies, and reliability predictions. Specific requirements include conducting qualification and endurance testing on a Generator/Constant Speed Drive (CSD) unit for at least 1,500 hours with 25% at extreme temperature ranges, performing teardown analysis with root cause and corrective action analysis (RCCA), and generating a Technical Report-Study documenting system configuration, findings, and recommendations for production line shutdowns. The contractor must develop solutions addressing material availability challenges and long-term sourcing strategies. Responses to the capability survey must be submitted via email to Jacob Booth, Procuring Contracting Officer, AFLCMC/WBK, jacob.booth@us.af.mil, no later than March 10, 2026. Both large and small businesses are encouraged to participate, with joint ventures and teaming arrangements permitted. The government notes that participation in this market research does not guarantee future solicitation or contract award, and participants will not be reimbursed for survey participation expenses.

B-52H COMPONENT ANALYSIS
See Table 1 LRU listing
Platform: B-52 Weapon System
CAUTION:
This sources sought synopsis is being conducted to identify potential sources that may possess the expertise, capabilities, and experience to meet the requirements for the in-depth component analysis of B-52H components listed in Table 1. Contractors/Institutions responding to this market research are placed on notice that participation in this survey may not ensure participation in future solicitations or contract awards as this sources sought synopsis is for planning purposes and may not result in solicitation or contract. The government will not reimburse participants for any expenses associated with their participation in this sources sought synopsis.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Attached in Table 1 are the Line Replaceable Units (LRU) that require an in-depth technical assessment to provide the Government with a way forward to achieving improvements in the form of a set of reports of findings and recommendations.
a. The Government may be able to provide additional technical data upon request.
2. If, after reviewing these LRUs, you desire to participate in the market research, you should provide documentation that supports your company’s capability in meeting these requirements. Failure to provide documentation may result in the government being unable to adequately assess your capabilities. If you lack sufficient experience in a particular area, please provide details explaining how you would overcome the lack of experience/capabilities to perform that portion of the requirement (i.e., teaming, subcontracting, etc.)
a. Identify any areas of work that your organization believes should be broken out exclusively for Small Business.
3. Both large and small businesses are encouraged to participate in this Market Research.
Joint ventures or teaming arrangements are encouraged. All submissions will be reviewed IAW FAR Part 19 procedures.
4. Questions relative to this market survey should be addressed to Jacob Booth, Procuring
Contracting Officer, AFLCMC/WBK, jacob.booth@us.af.mil
PURPOSE/DESCRIPTION:
The Government requires in-depth technical assessments of Line Replaceable Units (LRUs), Table 1, on the B-52H platform to improve supportability, address material availability constraints, and mitigate obsolescence risks. This market research aims to identify potential mailto:jacob.booth@us.af.mil sources capable of providing engineering analysis, failure analysis, testing, and recommendations to ensure the long-term viability of these critical components.
The contractor will develop solutions to address material availability challenges, including Diminishing Manufacturing Sources (DMS) and potential production line impacts, and develop long-term sourcing strategies. They will create data analysis based on the engineering evaluation tasks identified for each LRU. As applicable, the Contractor will address the obsolete components issues/risks and the steps to mitigate these risks for future obsolescence mitigation solutions. The analyses, tests, specific type of equipment to be developed or modified will be provided in a Technical Report-Study. The Technical Report-Study will document the weapon system configuration, present a system overview, summarize findings from the engineering evaluations, and support recommendations for addressing material availability and obsolescence risks for the identified LRUs. These services will define the weapon system configuration, present system overview and a summary to support the recommendation production line shutdowns for the LRUs identified in Table 1 below.
The Contractor shall take a Generator / Constant Speed Drive (CSD), produced to current specifications and current part number configuration, and perform Qualification/Endurance testing on this unit. The goal is to run the Generator / CSD for at least 1,500 hours, with at least 25% of that time being tested in the extreme temperature ranges of the LRU operational specification. After this testing period, the Generator/CSD shall undergo teardown and appropriate analysis of any failure or excessive wear. This unit(s) can be one of the three to be assessed as part of the above task: Failure analysis of failed units. Test plan and test report shall be delivered per DI-MISC-80508B for Government approval
The Government will transfer ownership of a failed unit to Contractor, at no cost to Contractor, for failure analysis and short/long term corrective action recommendations. These assessments shall also provide recommendations to improve the robustness of the existing design and provide recommendations for redesign options. Contractor shall perform the following procedures for the assessments, at a minimum: 1) teardown of the units, 2) measurements of all components, and
3) analysis performed on the component(s) and RCCA of those components and sub-assemblies.
(Include bearing frequencies/vibration at failure and possible assembly frequency signals prior to catastrophic failure in the report.)
