About this file
This is a Questions and Answers document for a Source Sought notice (FA700025Q0022) regarding a dilution refrigerator for the Air Force Academy's Physics Department and Laser and Optics Research Center. The Q&A addresses three key technical specifications: (1) The 2.1m height requirement is firm due to building constraints and doorway limitations, with no flexibility possible without major structural modifications; (2) Neither radial nor vertical windows are required as lasers will be input via fiber optics; and (3) While 1T is the preferred magnetic field strength, 2T or 3T would be acceptable alternatives.
The associated source sought notice seeks a 3He4He dilution refrigerator capable of reaching temperatures down to 10 mK for silicon quantum computing research. Key requirements include 500 W cooling power at 100 mK, cryogen-free solenoid magnet with 4+ inch bore, vibration isolation under 20 nm, turbo molecular pump, 30 L sample space, and maximum dimensions of 2.0 x 1.4 m horizontal and 2.1 m height. Interested vendors must provide capability statements including their business size, socioeconomic status, teaming arrangements, and relevant past performance.

Questions and Answers
1. The requirement states that the height cannot exceed 2.1m. However, for a magnet dilution refrigerator system, the usual height is at least 2.4. Could you please inform us how much room there is for flexibility on this requirement?
We do in fact require this to be no more than 2.10 m tall to fit through the doors we have in this building. We have an old building from the 1960s, and the max height of anything must be less than
2.10 m to fit. If something is taller than that, we will have to tear out with welding torches the steel frame of the doors, and then also remove with jackhammers some cinderblocks which are part of the load bearing walls of the building. It is not clear if that would be even possible or feasible.
2. Considering the research purpose of the dilution system, would it require radial or vertical windows?
We would not require either type of window. We will put lasers in via fiber optics.
3. Is 1T the preferred field strength, or would 2T or 3T also be acceptable for the purpose?
Yes; 1 T is the preferred magnetic field strength, but yes; 2 T or 3 T would be acceptable.
