About this file

This is a Questions and Answers document for a U.S. Air Force solicitation (FA558726Q0045) concerning the delivery and installation of a rolling shelving unit system for the 48 CMS Fuels Shop. The Q&A clarifies technical specifications and installation requirements for the mobile storage system, which will be located at ground level in a designated area with access points free of curbs for material delivery.

The system specifications include a footprint of 8,840 mm × 2,483 mm with a 760 mm clear aisle, with a maximum height of 8 feet (2,400 mm) to comply with fire suppression system clearances. The first cabinet will be static/fixed, with three to four remaining units configured as mobile storage. The system must be manually operated with no electrical components, feature coated metal construction, and be highly modular to allow adjustment of shelf heights. Drawers will comprise a maximum of 10% of the system with a 200 lb per drawer weight capacity, preferably consolidated in one or two mobile bays. The installation area has been approved for floor drilling, with the contractor required to submit a detailed floor plan indicating all drill and anchor points for prior approval. The Q&A document references attached layouts, reference photos, and room measurements in both metric and imperial units to support contractor design and bidding efforts.

Q&A

1. Is there a drawing and/or layout available for the project? Or any other visual representation of what the system looks like with internal elevations included? My design manager was having a difficult time determining how the system was configured and we’d need an idea on how to design the internal carriage elevations as well. I’ll include our mobile storage product brochure for reference, but please let me know if you have any questions or if there is any information that I can provide to assist.

a. See attached for a rough layout. The yellow area denotes usable area, with 2 configurations possible (either against the NE wall or free-standing in the middle of the floor. The former is preferred).

2. Could you please provide Attachment 1 CAD Drawing – “Mobile Shelving System 64x27 – USAF” referenced in the Statement of Work? I do not see the CAD drawing included with the solicitation documents provided.

a. Unfortunately, the single CAD drawing we have was designed by another contractor prior to solicitation to assist with visualization and is therefore unable to be used or referenced for the remainder of this project.

3. Are any layout or elevation drawings available?

a. See attached for a rough layout. The only elevation requirements are: at or under 8 feet so as not to interfere with fire suppression systems; and, slight ramps/slopes/graded edges to eliminate trip hazards entering the track area.

4. Are any photos of the installation area or an existing/reference system available?

a. Only the attached layout and reference photos.

5. What floor level will the system be installed on? If it is above ground level, is there a usable lift, or will materials need to be carried up stairs?

a. Ground level; there are access points with no curbs for materials to be brought in.

6. Please confirm which configuration is acceptable:

a. 8,840 mm × 2,483 mm with a 760 mm clear aisle;

b. or 9,080 mm × 2,483 mm with a 1,000 mm clear aisle.

The manufacturer’s nearest standard height within the stated 2,200 mm height is 2,180 mm. Please also confirm whether 2,180 mm is acceptable.

a. Of the provided options, (a) is something we could work with. 2,180 mm is well within limits, and we could push up to 2,400 mm if that expands options.

7. Is there a drawing and/or layout available for the project? Or any other visual representation of what the system looks like with internal elevations included? My design manager was having a difficult time determining how the system was configured and we’d need an idea on how to design the internal carriage elevations as well. I’ll include our mobile storage product brochure for reference, but please let me know if you have any questions or if there is any information that I can provide to assist.

a. See attached layout for a topical floor plan showing planned storage area, and attached reference photos from a Google search showing what I have in mind.

8. Footprint & Layout: We have requested the building layout and measurements. Alternatively, if the end-user can provide a marked-up sketch showing the doors, the minimum 36-inch fire exit clearance, workstations, and the exact area the rolling cabinets will occupy, that would be greatly appreciated. We noted the vertical pipes along the wall that we will need to avoid.

a. Please see the attached, poorly done room layout in Microsoft Paint. It’s not to scale, and I didn’t leave the space between the shelves and the wall to account for the vertical pipes, but the measurements are accurate in metric and converted to empirical.

9. System Configuration: Only the first cabinet will be static/fixed. The remaining units (3 to 4, or as many as we can fit) will be mobile.

a. Yes, “first” referring to the interior cabinet (farthest from the exterior door).

10. Operation: The system will be manually operated (no electric cabinets).

a. Correct, no electrical components are approved for this project.

11. Dimensions: The height limit is an absolute maximum of 9 feet, though 8 feet is perfectly acceptable to the end user.

a. Let’s keep the maximum height to 8 feet (2,400 mm), to ensure Fire and Safety regulations are complied with. We’re not that tall, anyway.

12. Drawer Allocation: A maximum of 10% of the system will consist of drawers. The end user prefers to consolidate all drawers into one or two of the internal mobile bays. A weight capacity of 200 lbs per drawer is sufficient.

a. I like the designs some have submitted using the bottom half of a few bays, with shelves on top. So long as only ~10% of the storage solution is

13. Modularity: The system will be highly modular to allow for easy adjustment of shelf heights.

a. Yes, please.

14. Materials: Coated metal construction.

a. Yes, please.

15. Installation: If our track design requires floor drilling, we will provide a detailed floor plan indicating all drill/anchor points for your prior approval.

a. I expect it will require floor drilling, and the entire floor within the yellow-highlighted is approved for drilling.
