About this file
This document is a Salient Characteristics specification for a 727 AMS Widebody Towable Passenger Stairway required for delivery to RAF Mildenhall, Building 599, Air Freight Terminal, IP28 8NT by July 2026.
The equipment must be a towable passenger stairway designed to safely embark and disembark passengers from commercial wide-body and narrow-body aircraft. The stairway must be adjustable to service aircraft door sill heights ranging from 134 inches to 223 inches and feature a reliable manual or powered height adjustment mechanism, such as a hydraulic hand pump. The unit must support a minimum top platform weight capacity of 1,000 lbs and an overall stairway weight capacity of 3,500 lbs. The top platform must have a minimum area of approximately 3,800 square inches (76" x 50" layout) with steps featuring a minimum width of 48 inches to accommodate safe passenger flow.
Structurally, the stairway must be constructed of highly durable, corrosion-resistant materials such as galvanized steel or heavy-duty aluminum and include an adjustable or swiveling bumper mechanism (adjustable by ±5 degrees) for flush fit against angled aircraft fuselages. Safety features must include an integrated, battery-powered LED lighting system (UK spec 220 volts) with rechargeable batteries, onboard charger, and battery level indicator; non-marring, soft rubber bumpers on all aircraft contact points; sliding, retractable, or adjustable handrails at the top platform; and heavy-duty stabilizer jacks for secure positioning during passenger use. The unit must be a towable unit equipped with a heavy-duty, folding-style towbar with standard towing eye. Expected overall weight should be approximately 4,500 lbs with a manageable footprint for tarmac storage and standard shipping.

Salient Characteristics 727 AMS Widebody Towable Passenger Stairway
Royal Air Force (RAF) Mildenhall, Air Freight Terminal, Bldg. 599
July 2026
1. General Requirements
• Equipment Type: Towable passenger stairway designed to safely embark and disembark passengers from various commercial wide-body and narrow-body aircraft.
• Mobility: Must be a towable unit equipped with a heavy-duty towbar (e.g., folding style with a standard towing eye) for safe and efficient maneuverability on the tarmac.
2. Operational Range & Capacity
• Service Height Range: Must be adjustable to service aircraft door sill heights ranging from approximately 134 inches up to 223 inches.
• Platform Capacity: Must support a minimum top platform weight capacity of 1,000 lbs.
• Stairway Capacity: Must support a minimum overall stairway weight capacity of 3,500 lbs.
• Height Adjustment: Must feature a reliable manual or powered mechanism (e.g., a hydraulic hand pump or equivalent system) for safely adjusting platform height.
3. Structural & Design Features
• Platform Size: Must feature a spacious top platform to allow for safe passenger transition (minimum area of approximately 3,800 square inches, comparable to a 76” x 50” layout).
• Step Width: Steps must have a minimum width of 48 inches to accommodate comfortable and safe passenger flow.
• Materials: Steps and platform must be constructed of highly durable, corrosion-resistant materials (e.g., galvanized steel, heavy-duty aluminum, or equivalent) to ensure a long service life in outdoor environments.
• Bumper System: The platform must include an adjustable or swiveling bumper mechanism (e.g., adjustable by +/- 5 degrees) to allow for a close, flush fit against angled aircraft fuselages.
4. Safety & Accessories
• Lighting: Must include an integrated, battery-powered lighting system (e.g., LED or equivalent) to illuminate steps and platform during nighttime or low-light operations.
• Voltage: UK spec 220 volts.
• Power & Charging: The lighting system must be powered by a rechargeable, heavy-duty battery, and must include an integrated onboard battery charger as well as a battery level indicator.
• Aircraft Protection: Must feature non-marring, soft rubber bumpers (or equivalent protective material) on all aircraft contact points to prevent damage to the fuselage.
• Handrails: Must include sliding, retractable, or adjustable handrails at the top platform to safely clear outward-swinging aircraft doors while maintaining fall protection for passengers.
• Stability: Must be equipped with heavy-duty stabilizer jacks to firmly secure the stairway during passenger use.
5. Aircraft Compatibility
• Must be capable of safely servicing a wide variety of commercial aircraft falling within the 134”–223” sill height range.
6. Physical Footprint & Shipping Constraints
• Size and Weight: While exact dimensions may vary by manufacturer, the unit should have a manageable footprint for typical tarmac storage, towing, and standard shipping profiles. Expected overall weight should be roughly 4,500 lbs, with an overall footprint not exceedingly restrictive for standard ground support equipment staging.
• Delivery: Delivery to 727 AMS, Building 599, Air Freight Terminal, RAF Mildenhall, IP28 8NT
