About this file
This document is a Request for Information (RFI) for the 36 MXS Clausing Hybrid Milling Machine procurement. The RFI addresses two key vendor inquiries regarding equipment specifications and potential alternative equipment configurations. The primary focus is on ensuring equipment compatibility, specifically the spindle configuration (NMTB30 vs NMTB40) and the ability to use interchangeable tooling.
The government's responses emphasize that the critical requirement is the inclusion of the Mil Pwr controller, which serves dual purposes of machining aircraft components and functioning as a training platform. The contracting office indicates flexibility in specific hardware details (such as servomotor types or travel distances) as long as the core operational requirements are met. The RFI highlights the importance of maintaining a consistent Cartesian Coordinate programming system that aligns with other CNC equipment in the unit, facilitating operator training and technological familiarity.

FA524025QM113 – 36 MXS Clausing Hybrid Milling Machine
Request for Information:
1. Q: Is the model “NMTB40” spindle acceptable instead of the “NMTB30” for the mills?
A: NMTB40 could be acceptable as long as both pieces of equipment use the NMTB40 spindle to allow for tooling interchangeability. If the equipment cannot have interchangeable tooling that would require additional tooling to be purchased by the unit hindering their ability to complete capability requirements.
2. Q: We are requesting that this be “or equal” request as the Clausing machine is made by Avmax, Division of Manford Machinery and we represent Manford to the US Dept of Defense exclusively. The specifications of the two brands’ models are identical without exception.
All parts are interchangeable.
The following items cannot be installed on a 2 axis Mil Pwr control due to the servomotors will already mounted on the axis. Power feed motion is accomplished by the MilPwr servos in manual mode.
• 1 EVS250-X X Axis Power Feed – Travel – 32” Minimum (Installed)
• 1 EVS250-Y Y Axis Power Feed – Travel – 14” Minimum (Installed)
A: The specific provider of the equipment is not a determining factor, as long as all outlined requirements are met. As previously stated, the two machines must have interchangeable tooling, meaning both must utilize identical spindle configurations.
The specified travel distances represent the minimum necessary to ensure the equipment is adequately sized for machining aircraft components.
The most critical requirement is the inclusion of the Mil Pwr controller, as the equipment will serve a dual purpose: facilitating both manual and CNC machining of aircraft parts, while also functioning as a training platform. The Mil Pwr controller operates using the Cartesian Coordinate system for programming, which forms the foundation of CNC operations. This system is also utilized in programming our OMAX waterjet, providing a consistent framework for understanding CNC machine control.
Establishing familiarity with this system will equip operators with the fundamental knowledge required to transition to more advanced machining technologies.
To further clarify, the inclusion of the Mil Pwr controller ensures the necessary functionality for both machining and training purposes. Therefore, the specific travel capabilities of the power feed or the type of servos/motors utilized do not present significant limitations to operational effectiveness.
