Investigation on High Performance Tunable Multilayer Capacitors and Piezoelectric Thin

Film Transformers (Document No. W90GQZ-71400032)

1. DESCRIPTION OF SERVICE.

This requirement is to provide financing in support of the research project titled “Investigation on High Performance Tunable Multilayer Capacitors and Piezoelectric Thin Film Transformers”, led by Professor Sahn Nahm, Dept. of Materials Science and Engineering, Korea University Research and Business Foundation, South Korea.

The goal of the proposal is to develop various new Tunable Multilayer Capacitors and Piezoelectric Thin Film Transformers. In the project, it is focused on to investigate the relation between the performance of the tunable devices and microstructural properties of Multilayer Capacitors. The sintering mechanism of the dielectric ceramics will be also studied. Tunable capacitors are widely used in various industrial applications, such as voltage controlled oscillators, phase shifters, filters, L/C circuits to set the resonance frequency and impedance matching in multi-band cellular handsets and mobile TV receivers. Tunable capacitors should have a large tunability and a low dielectric loss. The tunability and the loss of the ceramic capacitor can be influenced by the dopant types and the microstructure of the specimens such as defects and grain size. Moreover, the miniaturization of the capacitors can be realized by using the multilayer tunable dielectrics. For the synthesis of the multilayer tunable capacitors, Ag metal is frequently used as an electrode in multilayer devices because of its low cost and high conductivity. Since the melting temperature of Ag is 961 C, tunable dielectric ceramics for multilayer devices should be sintered at temperatures below 950 C. Therefore, the microstructure, types of the dopants and the sintering process of the dielectric ceramics are important to obtain the high quality multilayer tunable devices.

The objective of this proposed effort is effort to examine the development on the properties for tunable capacitor, which will be obtained in this work, are following:

. Tunability > 20 % . Applied electric field < 50 kV/cm . Frequency: 10 Hz ~ 1 MHz . Q > 100 . K-factor > 20 . Capacitance > 100 pF

The overall goal of this project is to (1) Material Design as; (1-1) Testifying that the microstructural and compositional design of BST and CCTO cermamics is a relevant factor for advanced tunable capacitors’ properties. (1-2) Investigating the most effective route for dielectrics with a large tunability with a low dielectric loss through an well-organized additive control technique. (2) Low Temperature Sintering as; It is one of the most important techniques to reduce the co-firing temperature because of the melting point of Ag electrode (~960 C). (3) Single-layer Fabrication as; (3-1) Modified tape casting process enables the thicknesses of multilayer films to be adjusted such that the capacitance of final products could be easily controlled. (3-2) Single layered PTFTs will be fabricated by the rf-sputtering method. (3-3) The efficiency of PTFTs could be increased through the epitaxially formed PZT thin films. (4) Multilayer Fabrication as; (4-1) Desired capacitance values should be obtained through the multilayer stacking processes. (4-2) Source technologies on multilayer PTFTs could be obtained during the project periods. (5) Multilayer Fabrication as; To achieve a better design of PTFTs (Piezoelectric thin-film transformer), numerical analysis of FEM simulation will be conducted.

Duration of this Research and Development is three years, comprised of 12 months for the basic period, 12 months for option 1 period, and 12 months for option 2 period. If data acceptable to the US Army, Aviation and Missile Research Development and Engineering Center (AMRDEC) cannot be collected and cannot be processed from the initial data in the basic period, the option period will not be exercised and the project will end after the basic period and the second payment.
