3 kW Solar-power-based micro-grid employing battery and super capacitor

(Document No. W90GQZ-71660037)

1. PROGRAM SCOPE/OBJECTIVES.

Micro-grids are small-scale localized and autonomous power grids that can operate independently or in conjunction with main power grid. A typical microgrid would consist of energy storage (one or many batteries), one or many energy sources (solar, wind, mechanical, main grid, diesel, etc.)

and control electronics. This proposed effort is for the development of a hybrid energy storage system as part of a microgrid that will reduce the overall lifecycle cost by extending the life of the batteries.

The hybrid energy storage system will utilize an HUC (Hybrid Ultra-Capacitor), which is a form of super capacitor that also has energy storage and retention capabilities similar to a battery, in combination with a battery. HUCs offer the following advantages over traditional batteries

Higher power density Quick charge and discharge times Higher charge currents Longer life (more than 100,000 cycles) Lower capacity units which can deliver the same discharge currents thereby reducing the size of the units

The scope of this effort is the research, development, and testing of a solar powered microgrid with 3 kW of combined battery and HUC energy storage system.

Duration of this Research and Development is 12 months.

1.1. Requirements.

This effort is for the design, optimization, fabrication, and testing of a solar powered microgrid with 3 kW of combined battery and HUC energy storage system.

1.2. Tasks.

1.2.1. Define the requirements for the 3 kW battery and HUC energy storage system, the Energy Management System (EMS) and the solar photovoltaic panel.

1.2.2. Design and fabricate the EMS to optimize the strengths of both HUC and battery. In particular, the EMS shall manage charge/discharge profiles of batteries to improve their life span while improving the efficiency of the entire system by harvesting low energy sources (e.g. cloudy conditions, low winds, etc.) effectively.

1.2.3. Design and fabricate the HUCs to meet the energy storage requirements.

1.2.4. Select and procure the solar photovoltaic panels and batteries required to meet the energy storage requirements.

1.2.5. Integrate the solar photovoltaic panels, HUCs, batteries, and EMS into a microgrid system, and conduct testing to verify functionality.

1.3. DELIVERABLES

The Contractor shall submit four (4) deliverables associated with this contract.
