STATEMENT OF WORK
FOR
DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY
RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT AND ENGINEERING COMMAND
INTERNATIONAL TECHNOLOGY CENTER-PACIFIC
(ITC-PAC)
NUCLEAR STRUCTURE OF 192-IR AND SEARCH FOR ISOMER DEPLETION
LEVELS
(Document No. W90GQZ-70820022)
1. DESCRIPTION OF SERVICE.
The objective of this research is to utilize the established expertise, facilities and instruments at the Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility, Australian National University, to improve the mapping of nuclear levels and transitions between levels for 192-Ir. This nuclide has a long-lived (241-years) isomer that may support novel energy-and-power applications. The mapping will facilitate a search for levels that could support an induced release of energy from that isomer.
Nuclear levels and the transitions between these levels are typically mapped through cutting-edge, time-correlated gamma spectroscopy measurements, ideally utilizing a variety of nuclear reactions to access different subsets of the excited states of the nuclide of interest. In this work, multiple experimental phases are planned using the CAESAR gamma-ray spectrometer at the Australian National University. The first phase will utilize a deuteron beam and the 192-Os(d, 2n)192-Ir reaction to perform an initial survey of the level scheme of 192-Ir. Next a 7-Li beam will be used to access higher-spin states in 192-Ir via lithium breakup reactions. Finally, (p, n) reactions at lower energy may be used in an option year to complete a detailed mapping of levels at lower energies. Together, this program of experiments comprise a campaign of study that should permit identification of levels and transitions, if any exist, that will support an induced release of energy stored by the long-lived (241-years) isomer of 192-Ir.
The duration of this Research and Development is 12 months with a 12-month option.
