About this file

This is a Questions and Answers document for a Wheel Storage Tray (WST) federal contract opportunity at Tyndall Air Force Base.

The government seeks to procure stackable wheel storage racks designed to hold seven mated Main Landing Gear (MLG) wheel assemblies per rack, with a target capacity of approximately 28 wheels per 463L pallet position through four stacked racks (two on bottom, two stacked on top). The wheel assemblies are approximately 13 inches wide, 33 inches in diameter, with rims approximately 20 inches in diameter, and weigh approximately 130 pounds each. The storage system must include dividers to prevent wheel collision during transportation and feature forklift pockets compatible with both 4K and 10K forklifts without specific dimension requirements. The government is willing to accept either commercial off-the-shelf products or fabricated solutions, provided they meet all stated specifications in the Salient Characteristics. No existing designs are currently available, and this solicitation is not replacing an existing system at Tyndall. The primary objectives are to maximize MLG wheel storage capacity while minimizing footprint and potential damage to wheel assemblies during transport and storage.

WST Questions and Answer

1. How many wheels per rack?

- WST must hold 7 mated wheel assemblies. We would like to maximize storage capability per pallet position, so stackable storage units are a necessity.

2. How wide are the wheels?

- The mated wheel assemblies are approximately 13 inches wide.

3. Are the rear main tires in question 33" or 34" diameter?

- The MLG wheel assemblies are approximately 33 inches in diameter. The rim itself is approximately 20 inches in diameter.

4. Are there any specific height and width desired for the pallet fork pockets?

- We do not have specific requirements for the fork pockets, but they must be able to be moved with a 4K forklift and/or a 10K forklift.

5. Are wheel dividers needed?

- Dividers are required to prevent wheels from colliding with each other during transportation.

6. Can you please clarify what is meant by the description two rows of tires? (Two across, two deep, X tires by Y tires per container?)

- Our plan is to have 4 racks per pallet position. Two on the bottom of the 463L pallet and two more racks stacked on top of them. We are not planning to store the majority of DSP wheels within ISU-90 containers.

7. Is there a goal of how many tires/containers can fit in a single ISU-90?

- Our plan is to palletize the wheels on 463L pallets. We want to store 7 mated MLG wheels per rack. This totals us out to approximately 28 wheels per pallet position. The main goal for this storage system is to maximize the amount of MLG wheels we can transport while taking up the smallest footprint and minimizing potential damage to the wheel assemblies.

8. Is this replacing an existing system?

- We do not currently have a system in place at Tyndall.

9. Can you clarify if this solicitation is for the design and manufacture of the Wheel Storage Containers, or if the design already exists?

- No designs currently exist. we are willing to accept commercial off the shelf products or fabricated products, as long as they meet the stated specs in the Salient Characteristics.

10. Do you have any conceptual designs for this rack?

- No, We just require a product that adheres to all stated specs in the Salient

Characteristics.

11. What’s the approximate weight of the wheel and tire assembly?

- About 130 lbs
