About this file
This document is a Questions and Answers file for a federal contract opportunity involving sunshades netting for fighter aircraft. The netting is intended to serve as a vertical barrier around open-sided sunshade structures to prevent drone intrusion, with specific requirements to withstand 400-degree heat from jet blast during aircraft taxiing. The structures will have fixed netting on row ends and retractable netting on north and south sides to allow aircraft entry and exit, with a potential capacity of 15 aircraft across three rows.
The solicitation emphasizes compliance with the Buy American Act and notes that aircraft netting is not explicitly covered by the Berry Amendment. The netting will be vertically hung and attached using specialized mounting hardware, with no expected loading during use. The contract is associated with the Department of the Air Force Air Combat Command, under NAICS code 313210, and vendors must certify their small business status if the NAICS code is not listed in their SAM profile. Interested vendors should contact Craig Gooden at craig.gooden@us.af.mil for additional information.

1FW Sunshades Netting Questions and Answers
1. Please include any photos of the area you'd like shaded, need to check which netting style just you need, I would like to know what these shade sails will be used for, in order to figure out a solution that will withstand 400 degrees of heat.
- These will not, in fact, serve as shade sails. The sunshade structures are already in place and provide a roof, but are open on all four sides. The netting will hang vertically like a retractable industrial curtain and serve as a wall barrier around the perimeter of each one of these structures to prevent drone intrusion The netting on the end of the rows will be fixed, while the north and south ends will be retractable for the entry/exit of aircraft. The requirement for withstanding 400 degrees is to mitigate damage from the jet blast of taxiing aircraft.
- Pictured below is an example of similar figher aircraft sunshades:
- Pictured below is higher top level view, with the top two rows potentially housing eight aircraft and the bottom row housing seven.
2. Can you tell me how these nets are being used?

3. Is the heat exposure temporary or sustained? What is the expected loading? Will the net be loaded at those extreme temps?
- Heat exposure should only be temporary due to jet blast from aircraft taxiing into or out of the aircraft sunshade. There should be no loading as the netting will hang vertically and serve as a barrier around the perimeter of the sunshade rows.
4. Is the net to be hung vertically or horizontally?
- Vertically
5. Is there a TAA or berry amendments for this purchase?
- We want to clarify that we emphasize compliance with the Buy American Act on all our products. While the Berry Amendment focuses on U.S.-sourced items in categories like food and clothing, it does not explicitly cover all materials or components. Regarding aircraft netting, it is generally considered a maintenance accessory and is not listed under the categories covered by the Berry Amendment. We remain committed to adhering to all applicable regulations and appreciate your understanding.
6. Can you please let me know what the nets are attached to and how they will be attached?
