SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS FOR ATVs & Tracks
Amendment 01 09 Aug 18
Revisions shown in red
The Survival Evasion Resistance and Escape (SERE) School at Fairchild AFB WA has a requirement for All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) equipped with removable tracks. ATVs are utilized in the execution of the five and one half month SERE Specialist technical training course. This course is conducting throughout a 550,000 acre remote wilderness training area. These ATV’s are utilized to transport cadre and equipment on roads and trails unsuited for 4x4 trucks. Additionally these ATV’s are utilized for medical emergency response to ensure students can be reached in a timely manner and evacuated from the field, if needed.
The SERE Specialist technical training course runs twice a year and training is conducted year around in all climatic conditions. Those conditions dictate transportation of cadre and emergency response in all conditions, to include gravel, dirt, dust, mud, snow and ice. Having tracked ATV’s provides the ability to perform in the austere training areas, traversing all climatic conditions year round. To effectively perform in the austere training area these ATV’s require the following capabilities.
The ATV & Tracks will have the following Salient Characteristics:
Automatic transmission to increase ease of use and prevent ATV mechanical wear and tear.
Minimum of 75+ horsepower gas engine to support the movement of two personnel and a minimum of 1,500 lbs towing capacity. ATV also needs to maintain at least 65% of its speed rating when equipped with tracks, due to the long distances traveled. Tracked ATV’s require more power to maneuver particularly in multiple feet of snow and muddy conditions.
Power steering is required to maneuver tracked ATV’s on confined trails with tracks.
At least 11 inches of travel to clear obstacles and rough terrain without causing damage to the
ATV.
Driving lights with low and high beams to support year around utilization and low light travel.
Rear brake lights for safety.
Front sealed compartment to protect survival and communications equipment from continual exposure to dust, dirt, snow, ice, mud and water.
On demand AWD and to support snow, mud, and ice movements. Non AWD ATV’s will not meet year around mission requirements.
High strength frame not exceeding a total ATV length of 87 inches, and tracks should not exceed
75lbs. These size demission’s and track weight will ensure placement and weight adherence on existing trailers, allowing safe transportation of ATV’s.
Must be subdued solid color such as black, grey, forest green, tan, or brown.
