About this file
This is a Salient Characteristics List for B-52H Engine Pod Covers that defines the technical and functional requirements for aircraft engine protection equipment.
The specification requires one engine pod cover per engine pod (four covers per B-52H aircraft) manufactured from heavy-duty vinyl material capable of remaining pliable at -40°F and resistant to aviation lubricants. The cover must not cause chafe damage to aircraft skin and must include red 3-foot streamers labeled "REMOVE BEFORE FLIGHT" for safety visibility. Functionally, each cover must accommodate one ground heater duct connection at the forward end with capability to fit both 12-inch and 6-inch diameter ducts (two connections per cover). The cover design must provide engine inlet inspection access with an opening large enough for technician entry without removing the cover, and this access opening must be sealable to prevent foreign object and snow intrusion when not in use. The cover must be foldable and storable in the aircraft's "47 section" aft compartment. Installation requirements include two independent closure methods (zipper and strap along bottom closure), a method for draining entrapped fluids while installed on the aircraft, and no soft inner lining. These specifications establish the minimum requirements for procurement of protective engine covers suitable for B-52H operations across diverse environmental conditions.
