3. EXECUTION:

3.1 PREPARATION:

3.1.1 Protect existing underground improvements from damage.

3.1.2 Remove foreign materials, plants, roots, stones and debris from site. Do not bury foreign material.

3.1.3 Remove contaminated subsoil.

3.1.4 Cultivate to depth of three (3) inches (75 mm) area to receive topsoil. Repeat cultivation areas where equipment has compacted subgrade.

3.2 SPREADING TOPSOIL:

3.2.1 Spread topsoil to depth of four (4) inches over area to be seeded. Place during dry weather and on dry unfrozen subgrade.

3.2.2 Cultivate topsoil to depth of four (4) inches with mechanical tiller. Cultivate inaccessible areas by hand. Rake until surface is smooth.

3.2.3 Remove from site, foreign materials collected during

cultivation.

3.2.4 Grade to eliminate rough spots and low areas where ponding may occurs. Maintain smooth, uniform grade.

3.2.5 Assure positive drainage away from buildings.

3.2.6 Finish ground level firm and sufficient to prevent sinkage pockets when irrigation is applied.

3.3 FERTILIZING:

3.3.1 Apply fertilizer at a rate of 10 pounds per 1,000 square feet (4.5 kilograms per 100 square meters).

02485-5

3.3.2 Do not apply grass seed and fertilizer at same time, in same machine.

3.3.3 Lightly water to aid breakdown of fertilizer and to provide moist soil for seed.

3.4 SEEDING:

3.4.1 Apply seed at a rate of six pounds per 1,000 square feet evenly in two intersecting directions. Rake in lightly.

3.4.2 Do not sow immediately following rain, when ground is too dry, or during windy periods.

3.4.3 Roll seeded area with roller not exceeding 112 pounds

(50 kilograms).

3.4.4 Apply water with fine spray immediately after each area has been sown.

3.5 HYDROSEEDING:

3.5.1 Apply slurry at rate of six pounds per 1,000 square feet evenly in two intersecting directions and with hydraulic seeder.

3.5.2 Immediately following hydroseeding, mulch areas by means of mulch blower at rate of 1,200 pounds per acre on level grade, 2,000 pounds on slopes.

3.5.3 Do not seed area in excess of that which can be mulched on same day.

3.6 HYDRO-MULCHING:

3.6.1 Hydro-Mulch. The mulch shall be uniformly applied at a rate of one ton per acre and shall cover a minimum of 95 percent of the seedbed area. After application, the mulch shall permit percolation of water to the underlying soil.

3.7 SEED PROTECTION ON SLOPES:

3.7.1 Cover seeded slopes where grade is 3:1 or greater with jute matting. Roll matting down over slopes without stretching or pulling.

3.7.2 Lay matting smoothly on soil surface, burying top end of each section in narrow six inch trench. Leave 12 inches overlap from top

02485-6 roll over bottom roll. Leave four inches overlap over adjacent section.

3.7.3 Staple outside edges and overlaps at 36 inch intervals.

3.7.4 Lightly dress slopes with topsoil to ensure close contact between matting and soil.

3.7.5 In ditches, unroll matting in direction of flow. Overlap ends of strips six (6) inches with upstream section on top.

3.9.2 Stand of Grass: The Contractor shall produce a stand of the specified grass that shall be alive, growing and healthy at the end of the maintenance period. Bare spots shall not exceed 4 percent of the total area seeded. Areas on which these requirements are not met shall be reseeded as required by the Contracting Officer until a stand of grass is produced. The maintenance period shall be extended until the density requirements are met.

3.9.3 Watering: Areas shall be watered frequently, by the

Contractor, to promote seed germination. Watering equipment and water shall be furnished by the Contractor of a type that will not damage finished grades. Watering shall be provided at such intervals and at such rates that wilting, puddling, and runoff do not occur. As turf develops, the frequency of waterings may be reduced and quantities increased as growth and moisture requirements dictate.

3.9.4 Mowing: The seeded areas shall be mowed to a height of

4 inches whenever the average height of grass becomes 6 inches. When the amount of cut mowed grass is heavy, it shall be removed to prevent destruction of the underlying turf. If weeds or other undesirable vegetation threaten to smother the planted species, such vegetation shall be uprooted and removed from the area.
