About this file

This document is a Statement of Need (SON) for a Cryostar NX70 Cryostat, a specialized medical instrument used for STAT processing of intraoperative samples in a pathology laboratory. The SON outlines the required technical specifications, including individually controlled temperature settings, adjustable blade temperature, ability to decontaminate while running, electronic height adjustment, fast freezing capability, and micron sectioning range.

The related federal contract opportunity is a Sources Sought notice issued by the 60th Contracting Squadron at Travis AFB, CA, seeking potential sources for the Cryostar NX70 Cryostat. The anticipated NAICS code is 334516 (Analytical Laboratory Instrument Manufacturing). The Sources Sought is for informational purposes only and does not constitute a Request for Quote or a commitment to procure the item. Responses must include company information, small business status (if applicable), and a capabilities package demonstrating compliance with the SON. Responses are due by 29 November 2024 at 1:00 PM Pacific Time.

Statement of Need for

60 MDTS

Histology/Pathology Laboratory

(Epredia Cryostar NX70)

Description: The NX70 Cryostats provide STAT processing of interoperative samples for the pathology laboratory. It is designed for use with multiple types of blades (high and low profile) which expands the types of samples that this procedure can be performed on. Several unique safety features include a cold disinfection process which allows for the machine to stayed turned on and still disinfect after procedures, reducing downtime and increasing procedure capabilities.

Turning the machine off requires at least 24 hours to restart and cool down. It also has an ergonomic feature in height adjustment of the machine from 32 to 44 inches. Unlike, any other cryostats on the market, this machine cools the parts of the instrument not the air itself. This lends to safer handling of items inside the chamber, like specimen chucks or blades as well as prevents the loss of temperature when the door to instrument is opened for adding, removing or adjustment of specimens. This is a “Brand name or equal” request.

Contractor shall deliver the following:

1. Machine

1.1. 2 Cryostats that have individually controlled temperature settings on object specimen holder and blade carrier, cooled to at least -20 Celsius.

1.2. Must have adjustable blade temperature to at least -20 Celsius.

1.3. Must include ability to decontaminate/disinfect instrument while instrument is still running.

1.4. Must electronic height adjustable from at least 32 to 44 inches to allow for sitting or standing work position.

1.5. Must provide ability to fast freeze down to -60 Celsius.

1.6. Must section from 0.5 to 500 microns in thickness.

1.7. Must have immediate and automatic defrost capabilities.

1.8. Must be contoured to fit body.

2. AC Electrical Requirements
