SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS / OPERATION CONDITIONS
Aluminum Freestanding Raised Enclosures (Swine Cages)
Salient Characteristics:
Each cage shall consist of aluminum freestanding raised enclosure with sliding gates and vinyl coated flooring. The (18) Aluminum Indoor Pig Holding Pens will at a minimum meet the following salient features:
(a) Cages - Shall be constructed of high strength, corrosion resistant, 6000 series alloy aluminum.
All hardware needed for assembly or accessories shall be of high chrome, high-nickel, and 300 series stainless steel for strength and corrosion resistance. Any aluminum oxide produced during the manufacturing process shall be removed by blasting with glass-bead shot and cleaned with an acid brightener.
(b) Front Panel with sliding gates (18 panels required) – Front panels shall be framed with 1 ¼ inch aluminum square tube of 6063-T6 alloy. Within the front panel shall be a sliding gate half the width of the overall front panel. The entire front panel and sliding gate shall be enclosed with
3/8 inch vertical rods spaced on 1 ½ centers. The rods shall pass through .200 x 1 ¼ inch aluminum flat bar spaced no greater than 10” centers. The rods and bar shall be from 6061-T6 extruded aluminum. The sliding gage shall travel on stainless steel rollers with bearings in a 14-guage stainless steel “C” track. The latch shall be a stainless steel 2-point gravity latch (see
Figure M). A special extrusion should be used to support the raised floor of the enclosure and a 6 inch leg with adjustable leg leveler is required at the base of the side panel (see Figure G). All aluminum extrusions shall have a .125 radius corner to prevent sharp edges. All welds shall be de-burred, glass bead blasted and acid washed after fabrication. Panels shall be 4 ft x 6 ft. (See
Figure A)
(c) Side/End Panels (4 panels required) - The panel shall be rod construction. Basic framing members shall be 1 ¼ inch square groove tube extruded aluminum, not less than .090 thickness.
Rods shall be 3/8 inch diameter on 1 ½ centers. Rectangular bar, .2000 x 1 ¼ inch shall be spaced no greater than every 10” to give added strength and rigidity. The panel located within the basic frame shall be removable to allow for cage expansion. A special extrusion should be used to support the raised floor of the enclosure and a 6 inch legs with adjustable leg leveler is required at the ends of the panel frame (see Figure G). Side/End Panels should be 72 inches long by 80 ¼ inches high (See Figure B)
(d) Removable and Reversible Panels (16 panels required) – The panel shall be rod construction.
Basic framing members shall be 1 ¼ inch square groove tube extruded aluminum, not less than
.090 thickness. Panels should be
72 inches long by 80 ¼ inches high. (See Figure C).
(e) Back Panels (18 panels required) – The panel shall be shall be rod construction.
A special extrusion should be used to support the raised floor of the enclosure (see figure G). Back panels shall be 4 ft wide and 6 feet high. (See Figure B)
(f) Raised Floor – Flooring shall be extruded fiberglass slatted flooring with a fine grit surface.
Grey in color with a 3/8 inch gap in between slats. The slats are on 2 inch centers. The fiberglass flooring is broken into 3, 24 inch long by 48 inches wide sections and rests on special extrusions built into the primary panels. (See Figures E, F, and G)
(g) Poly Bucket Feeder Bracket – An adjustable stainless steel bracket is required to mount the poly bucket feeder which is 12 inches wide and 7 inches deep. The Feeder Bracket is mounted on the inside of the Front Panel (See Figure H).
(h) Poly Bucket Feeder – Feeder shall be 12 inches wide and 7 inches deep and should securely attach to the Poly Bucket Feeder Bracket described in (g) above (See Figures I and J). The feeder has stainless steel rods added to prevent the animal from knocking the feeder on the floor while eating (See Figure K).
(i) Cages shall be built and assembled as a double wide cage with a removable divider panel that divides the cage into two equal size smaller cages.
(j) Shall be constructed of aluminum rod Shall be constructed of aluminum removable rod side panels with adjustable legs and angles 72” long x 80 1/4” high.
(k) Edstrom Water Manifolds - Cages shall include Edstrom Stainless Steel Adjustable Automatic
Water Manifolds attached to each back panel (see Figure L).
(l) Installation shall be done according to the attached Swine Cage Floor Plan.
Operation Conditions:
The 59th Clinical Research Division (59 CRD) require the purchase of 18 Aluminum Indoor Pig Holding
Pens to be located in room #160 of our animal vivarium. The holding pens will be used for housing research animals of various size and species. The requested equipment will bolster a depleting indoor housing capability needed to support our military readiness training and GME research missions. The pens shall be of aluminum construction and consist of aluminum sliding gates, aluminum rod side panel with adjustable legs and angles (includes removable rod divider panels between runs to expand the run size if needed), vinyl coated flooring, and poly bucket feeders with stainless steel adjustable brackets for large swine.
