About this file
This document is a Technical Requirements Document (TRD) dated 19 October 2026, establishing specifications for the procurement of 270 units of heavy-duty circular electrical connector part number RT9730-19-12S-546. The connector is a commercial-grade equivalent aligned with military specification MIL-DTL-22992 Class L performance standards and is intended for military ground support equipment, power distribution systems, industrial machinery, and harsh-environment applications requiring secure coupling, environmental sealing, and high reliability.
The TRD specifies comprehensive electrical, mechanical, environmental, and quality requirements. Electrically, the connector features 12 socket contacts in shell size 19, suitable for high-power Class L applications with low milliohm contact resistance, and includes continuous grounding paths when mated. Mechanically, it employs quick-disconnect heavy-duty coupling with secure positive locking, minimum 500+ mating cycles durability, and keyed polarization to prevent mismating. Environmental specifications include operating temperature range typically -55°C to +125°C, IP67-equivalent sealing capability, corrosion resistance to salt fog and industrial atmospheres, and resistance to fuels, oils, hydraulic fluids, and cleaning agents. Materials include aluminum alloy shell with corrosion-resistant plating, copper alloy contacts with gold or silver plating, high-temperature insulator material, and fluorosilicone seals. Quality assurance provisions require ISO 9001 or AS9100-compliant manufacturing, lot traceability, incoming inspection including visual examination, dimensional checks, contact retention testing, insulation resistance and dielectric withstanding voltage sampling, and potential First Article Inspection for new applications. The document emphasizes that system designers must obtain official manufacturer datasheets from Robert Technologies or Western Protective Solutions and verify intermateability before final procurement, as the exact meaning of the "-546" modifier and precise electrical ratings require manufacturer confirmation.

Technical Requirements Document (TRD)
Heavy-Duty Circular Electrical Connector
Date: 19 October 2026
1. Scope
This Technical Requirements Document (TRD) defines the functional, electrical, mechanical, environmental, and quality requirements for the heavy-duty circular electrical connector part number RT9730-19-12S-546 (Qty 270 Ea).
The connector is a commercial-grade equivalent (or higher) to military-specification power connectors, primarily aligned with the performance intent of MIL-DTL-22992 Class L (heavy-duty, high-current circular connectors) and similar Class L interconnect families. It is intended for use in military ground support equipment, power distribution systems, industrial machinery, and other harsh-environment applications requiring secure coupling, environmental sealing, and high reliability.
This TRD is intended for procurement, qualification, incoming inspection, and system integration purposes. It does not replace the manufacturer’s official datasheet or any applicable military specification.
2. Applicable Documents
• MIL-DTL-22992 – Connectors, Electrical, Circular, Heavy Duty, Quick Disconnect, Environment Resisting (Class L intent)
• MIL-STD-810 – Environmental Engineering Considerations and Laboratory Tests
• MIL-STD-202 – Test Methods for Electronic and Electrical Component Parts
• Manufacturer documentation for Robert Technologies RT9730 series (or Western
Protective Solutions equivalent)
• Any applicable system-level interface control document (ICD) or cable harness specification that references this part
3. Technical Requirements
3.1 Electrical Requirements
• Contact Arrangement: 12 contacts (socket) in shell size 19
• Current Rating: Suitable for high-power Class L applications (typical individual contact ratings in this family range from tens to hundreds of amperes depending on wire size and contact design – exact rating to be confirmed on manufacturer datasheet)
• Voltage Rating: Compatible with power distribution voltages typical of MIL-DTL-
22992 Class L connectors
• Contact Resistance: Low milliohm range consistent with power connectors
• Insulation Resistance & Dielectric Withstanding Voltage: Per applicable MIL-DTL-
22992 or manufacturer equivalent requirements
• Shielding / Grounding: Shell provides continuous grounding path when mated (standard for this class of connector)
3.2 Mechanical Requirements
• Shell Size: 19
• Coupling Style: Quick-disconnect, heavy-duty (typical of Class L / MIL-DTL-22992 family – bayonet or threaded depending on exact series variant)
• Mating / Unmating: Secure, positive lock with visual/tactile confirmation of full mating
• Contact Retention: Contacts shall meet or exceed retention force requirements of the governing military specification or manufacturer standard
• Durability: Minimum mating cycles consistent with Class L power connectors (typically
500+ cycles)
• Polarization / Keying: Keyed to prevent mismating (exact keying position defined by manufacturer code 546 if applicable)
3.3 Environmental Requirements
• Operating Temperature: Wide range suitable for outdoor / military ground equipment
(exact limits per manufacturer – typically -55 °C to +125 °C or better for Class L equivalents)
• Sealing: Environment-resisting; capable of meeting IP67 or equivalent when properly mated and with appropriate backshell/accessory
• Corrosion Resistance: Resistant to salt fog, humidity, and industrial atmospheres (shell plating and materials selected accordingly)
• Vibration / Shock: Suitable for ground vehicle and industrial machinery environments
(MIL-STD-810 methods as applicable)
• Fluid Resistance: Resistant to fuels, oils, hydraulic fluids, and cleaning agents commonly encountered in military/industrial settings
3.4 Materials & Finish
• Shell Material: Aluminum alloy or equivalent high-strength material with corrosion-resistant plating (common finishes include cadmium, zinc-nickel, or electroless nickel – exact finish tied to the -546 modifier)
• Contacts: Copper alloy with appropriate plating (gold or silver over nickel typical for power contacts)
• Insulator: High-temperature, high-dielectric thermoplastic or thermoset material
• Seals / Gaskets: Fluorosilicone or equivalent elastomers for environmental sealing
3.5 Intermate ability
The RT9730 series is marketed as a commercial equivalent that matches or exceeds the dimensional and performance intent of MIL-DTL-22992 Class L connectors. Full intermate ability with specific military or other commercial part numbers must be verified by the manufacturer or by physical testing. Do not assume drop-in interchangeability without confirmation.
4. Quality Assurance Provisions
• Connectors shall be manufactured under a quality system compliant with ISO 9001 or equivalent (AS9100 preferred for aerospace/defense use).
• Lot traceability and material certifications required upon request.
• Incoming inspection shall include: visual examination, dimensional checks (shell size, contact arrangement), contact retention, insulation resistance, and dielectric withstanding voltage sampling as defined by the procuring activity.
• First Article Inspection (FAI) or Qualification Testing may be required for new applications or critical systems.
5. Packaging, Marking & Storage
• Each connector shall be marked with manufacturer name or logo, part number (RT9730-
19-12S-546), and lot/date code.
• Packaging shall protect against moisture, contamination, and physical damage during storage and shipment.
• Recommended storage: dry environment, protective caps installed on both ends.
6. Notes / Limitations
1. This TRD is a synthesized requirements baseline based on publicly available descriptions of the RT9730 series and the performance class of MIL-DTL-22992 Class L connectors.
2. Critical: Obtain the official manufacturer datasheet, drawing, and any applicable qualification test reports from Robert Technologies / Western Protective Solutions before final procurement or system design freeze. The exact meaning of the “-546” modifier and precise electrical ratings are not fully detailed in open-source summaries.
3. System designers must perform compatibility analysis (current derating, wire gauge, backshell selection, EMI, thermal, etc.) for the specific application.
