About this file

This is a Questions and Answers (Q&A) document for an RFI regarding a fire riser replacement project at Building 810 on Schriever Space Force Base.

The Q&A clarifies that a site visit is scheduled for January 24 at 1100 hours and addresses several technical questions about the fire system. Key clarifications include: there is no isolation control valve (the backflow control valves serve this purpose), the original reference to a "shotgun riser" was incorrect and should specify a "dry riser and piping" installation, and although UFC 3-600-01 typically requires nitrogen systems for dry pipe installations, this replacement project will not require conversion to nitrogen since it is not a new installation. The work involves removing an existing Victaulic Series 756 Dry riser valve and replacing it with a new dry riser system for the Department of the Air Force Space Command.

RFI Questions/Answers

1. What date and time is the site visit scheduled?

24 Jan at 1100 hours

1. The pictures provided do not show an isolation control valve. Confirm location, accessibility, and provide a picture of the isolation control valve.

There is not an isolation control valve on this system. The backflow control valves serve to isolate the system and are functional.

1. Confirm the isolation control valve is operational and shuts down the water supply properly.

1. SOW 2.1 and Solicitation ‘Description of Product’ indicates to install a shotgun riser. Shotgun risers are utilized on wet based fire sprinkler systems and not dry pipe systems. Please clarify if the scope of work is to replace the current dry pipe valve assembly with a new dry pipe valve assembly or is the scope of work to remove the current dry pipe valve assembly and install a shotgun riser and convert the dry system to a wet fire sprinkler system (Note, if converted to wet the entire building temperature would be required to be maintained at no less than +40°F at all times).

This is a mistake and should read “…remove old fire system and install new dry riser and piping.”

1. SOW 2.2 C indicates to conform to NFPA-13 and UFC 3-600-01. UFC 3-600-01 Chapter 9 - 9-7.9.1 Dry pipe systems must utilize \2\/2/nitrogen \2\complying with the "Nitrogen Generation Systems" section of this UFC./2. Confirm if this dry pipe system is to be converted to nitrogen and if a nitrogen generator will be required.

As this is a replacement of an existing riser and not a new install we do not want to convert to nitrogen.
