SECTION 01100

SUMMARY

1.1 CIVIL WORKS DESCRIPTION

A. LOCATION OF THE LANDFILL FACE STABILIZATION

The landfill designated TAB 31 is located on the North Star Bay coast, south of Delong

Pier and north of D-Launch. The landfill designated TAB 32 is located south of TAB 31 on the coast.

The Landfill Face Stabilization comprises coast protection of 1 section (approx. 430 meter / 1400 ft) at TAB 32 and coast protection of 2 sections (approx. 140 meter / 460 ft + 350 meter / 1150 ft) at TAB 31. The purpose of the coast protection is to prevent erosion at the landfill faces and to cover the faces. On parts of the shore, where coast protection is not needed, landfill items such as scrap steel, fuel drums etc. shall be removed. The construction material for the coast protection is basaltic rocks extracted from the quarry at North Mountain and geotextile.

B. PROTECTION OF GOVERNMENT PROPERTY

Any damage to US Government property shall be repaired or replaced to their original condition by the Contractor, to the satisfaction of the Contracting Officer, at no additional cost to the US Government.

Special attention shall be paid to cables and utilities, which may be in the work area.

Contact the CCI to verify alignment.

C. SETTING OUT

The contractor shall mark the theoretical alignment of the coast protection baselines on the ground surface and adjust the lines to actual topography according to design principles shown on drawings. The contractor shall prepare a bathymetric measurement including a chart with contour lines of the near shore seabed and the shore (in the construction area) prior to starting construction works. As Built Survey including documentation shall be prepared.

D. WATER LEVEL CONDITIONS

Water levels (mainly tidewater, but also water levels governed by wind and atmospheric air pressure are included) has been registered by Kort- og

F. SITE CLEARING

Remove all landfill debris such as scrap steel, drums, constructions materials, vehicle wrecks etc. from shore and slopes in areas marked “REMOVE VISIBLE LANDFILL ITEMS” indicated on drawings C-11, C-12 and C-13 where coast protection structures will not cover the landfill face. All landfill debris shall be handled according to the general rules for handling of hazardous materials and waste and according to rules for environmental protection.

G. EXCAVATION FOR COAST PROTECTION

Excavate for coast protection to levels and contour lines as shown on drawings and specifications. Remove excavated soil from the site. Potentially contaminated soil shall be deposited. Trim excavation, remove loose matter. Place excavated soil on existing landfill according to instructions from CCI, layer thickness not higher than 1.0 meter.

Even up the soil surface to a smooth surface.

Based on cross sections shown on dwg. nos. C-31 to C-36 (the scope of work shown on drawing C-33 has been executed) and chainage lines for points designated “Q” according to dwg. no. C-14 the quantity of excavated soil has been calculated to 15,800 m3.

H. EROSION CONTROL DEVICES

Blast rocks of basalt from existing quarry at North Mountain. Screen the rocks into required gradations. Transport the rocks to temporary stockpile or to the construction site. Lay geotextile on excavated seabed. Place filter rocks on geotextile to lines and levels according to drawings and specifications. Place filter rocks of suitable gradation against existing slope of landfill in order to prevent migration of rocks into the landfill.

Place armour rocks according to lines and levels upon filter rock layers. Even up top of crest with smaller rocks for future traffic with construction vehicles.
