INTRODUCTION

1 PURPOSE.

The intent of this Technical Order (TO) is to show typical aircrew clothing and equipment requirements to support various aircraft. Tables are intended to show only what is available and qualified by AFLCMC/WNUS, its predecessor organizations, and aircraft program offices. No attempt has been made to delineate which pieces of flight gear should be worn on what missions or the manner in which they should be worn. This information can be found in the appropriate TO identified in Table A-1. This TO does not replace any commodity or aircraft TO. In addition, this TO does not include items that are deemed Safe-To-Fly (STF). For information concerning STF authorizations contact AFLCMC/WNUV, or the approving MAJCOM. For information on how to get an item qualified for use please contact the owning MAJCOM who will in turn contact AFLCMC/WNU. Only sustained equipment with an Air Force Technical Order (AFTO) number or AFI will be included in this manual.

2 SCOPE.

The Engineering Support Activity (ESA) responsible for each item is identified in the ESA column of each table. The ESA is the Military Service or service organization with technical authority for the given item. Air Force organizations, identified as ESA, are responsible for the Operational Safety, Suitability, and Effectiveness (OSS&E). Deficiency reports, MISHAP recommendations, product improvement recommendations, AFTO Forms 22, etc., will be submitted to the identified ESA.

Management of commercial off-the-shelf and non-developmental items will be supported as outlined in AFI 63-101.

3 ABBREVIATIONS.

All abbreviations used in this manual are shown in the list of abbreviations below. Standard abbreviations are in accordance with ASME Y14.38, Abbreviations and Acronyms for Use on Drawings and Related Documents.

NOTE

• When searching TO numbers in the Enhanced Technical Information Management System (ETIMS) catalog, please use the wildcard (*) after typing in the TO number. Many TOs are not available in paper format, (i.e., digital (WA-1) or Compact Disk (CD-1)). This ensures TOs in all media formats will populate the search.

• All required TOs necessary for Equipment in this publication are listed in Table A-1.

SAFETY SUMMARY

1 GENERAL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS.

This manual describes physical and/or chemical processes which may cause injury or death to personnel, or damage to equipment, if not properly followed. This safety summary includes general safety precautions and instructions that must be understood and applied during operation and maintenance to ensure personnel safety and protection of equipment. Prior to performing any specific task, the WARNINGs, CAUTIONs, and NOTEs included in that task shall be reviewed and under-stood.

2 WARNINGS, CAUTIONS, AND NOTES.

WARNINGs and CAUTIONs are used in this manual to highlight operating or maintenance procedures, practices, condi-tions, or statements which are considered essential to protection of personnel (WARNING) or equipment (CAUTION).

WARNINGs and CAUTIONs immediately precede the step or procedure to which they apply. WARNINGs and CAUTIONs consist of four parts: heading (WARNING, CAUTION, or icon), a statement of the hazard, minimum precautions, and possible results if disregarded. NOTEs are used in this manual to highlight operating or maintenance procedures, practices, conditions, or statements which are not essential to protection of personnel or equipment. NOTEs may precede or follow the step or procedure, depending upon the information to be highlighted. The headings used and their definitions are as follows:

Highlights an essential operating or maintenance procedure, practice, condition, statement, etc., which if not strictly observed, could result in injury to, or death of, personnel or long term health hazards.

Highlights an essential operating or maintenance procedure, practice, condition, statement, etc., which if not strictly observed, could result in damage to, or destruction of, equipment or loss of mission effectiveness.

NOTE

Highlights an essential operating or maintenance procedure, condition, or statement.

3 AIRCREW PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT.

Unauthorized modification to United States Air Force (USAF) equipment and/or deviations from published tech-nical guidance is not authorized. The use of unqualified, improperly-integrated, installed, inspected or maintained aircrew flight equipment may cause fatal injury to aircrew members.

NOTE

Refer to each weapon system configuration table in this Technical Order (TO) for qualified aircrew flight equip-ment. The qualified equipment must be integrated, installed, inspected and maintained in accordance with the applicable commodity TOs found in Table A-1.

Aircrew personal protective equipment plays an essential role in the safety and survival of USAF aircrew members. It has been designed to meet both the demands of normal flight operations and the extreme stresses of the combat environment. Its primary function is to provide protection against the hazards aircrew members encounter in-flight. In addition, its design has included emergency egress, descent, escape and evasion design features. Different combinations of personal protective equipment are used to provide overall protection and comfort to the aircrew member under various flight, emergency and vii environmental conditions. This publication was developed to assist Aircrew Flight Equipment personnel to identify clothing and equipment qualified by a competent authority for use by USAF aircrews on board USAF aircraft.

NOTE

Equipment items that are recognized by an Engineering Support Activity of AFLCMC/WNUV are contingent on limitations identified in their recommendations.

4 SURVIVAL KITS AND LIFE RAFTS.

Overwater flights are defined as flights, over open water, which are not within power-off gliding distance of land. The types of survival kit containers and life rafts authorized per aircraft engaged in overwater flights are prescribed under the specific Aircraft Mission Design Series (MDS) tables. One-man life rafts and kits are authorized for each crew member. Sufficient multi-place life rafts are authorized to provide space for maximum personnel capacity of the aircraft.

NOTE

One-person rafts as indicated in MDS Tables are authorized for the aircraft and may supplement the installed multi-place rafts at the discretion of the Operations Group Commander.

4.1 MAJCOM Responsibilities. It will be the responsibility of the MAJCOM to ensure the following is accomplished:

4.1.1 Survival kit containers are supplied on certain types of aircraft as contract furnished equipment. These containers should be used at all times; however, containers indicated in applicable MDS Tables may be used in case the contractor furnished containers are not available.

4.1.2 Periodic and preflight inspections are performed to ensure serviceability of the life rafts, containers and components.

4.1.3 Require aircraft commanders to ensure life rafts, containers and components are serviceable and correctly installed prior to overwater flights. Questionable items shall be removed and replaced with serviceable items.

NOTE

Consult MDS specific guidance on life raft and survival kit requirements. If conflict arises, the MDS guidance take precedence.

4.1.4 Verify MDS requirements and ensure all life rafts and related equipment are inspected and maintained in accordance with the applicable USAF technical order.

5 PERSONNEL PARACHUTES.

Personnel parachutes are available in two different styles - back and chest. To assure compatibility with aircraft mission configuration, assigned crew duties, etc., each style parachute is available with automatic or nonautomatic ripcord release feature.

5.1 Automatic Parachute. The automatic parachute will be used in:

• All ejection seat positions.

• Operational capability above 25,000 feet altitude.

• Operational capability over 300 knots indicated air speed.

5.2 Nonautomatic Parachute. Nonautomatic parachutes will be used in:

• Operational capability under 25,000 feet.

• Operational capability under 300 knots indicated air speed.

viii

5.3 Alternate Style Parachute. An alternate style parachute may be authorized by the MAJCOM Commander for all aircraft under their control when utilization of prescribed parachute is not compatible with aircraft mission, configuration, assigned crew duties, or safety of flight.

NOTE

BA-18 Parachute Assembly, Part Number (PN) 50C7024-18M, may be used in LIEU of BA-22 Parachute Assem-bly, PN 50C7024-22, in non-ejection seat aircraft.

6 FLYER’S BOOTS.

The listing of approved flyer’s boots is maintained at the Air Force Uniform Office link on the Portal at https://www.my.af.
