PURCHASE DESCRIPTION

FOR

HEIGHT MEASURING INSTRUMENT

1. SCOPE:

This procurement is for a height measuring instrument that will be used at most U.S. Air Force Precision

Measurement Equipment Laboratories (PMELs). The height measuring instrument is used to measure vertical height and perpendicularity up to 24 inches.

2. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

2.1 The height measuring instrument shall include all components necessary to measure vertical height up to 24 +/- 1 inch and perpendicularity up to 24 +/- 2 inch.

2.2 The height measuring instrument shall include a gage head and a mount that will be interfaced to the electronic display when measuring perpendicularity.

2.3 The height measuring instrument shall include a setting block to standardize the height measuring instrument when measuring from a bottom surface. The setting block will compensate for the height measuring instrument probe diameter.

2.4 The height measuring instrument shall include an electronic display with keys that can be selected to accomplish various preprogrammed internal and external measurements. In addition, all necessary cabling, battery, AC adapter/power supply shall be provided.

2.5 The height measuring instrument shall include a small diameter spherical probe kit for use when measuring vertical height. The small diameter spherical probes will be mounted vertically for measuring small parts or narrow shoulders.

2.6 The height measuring instrument shall include a long range spherical probe kit for use when measuring vertical height. The Long range spherical probes will be mounted horizontally for access into hard to reach areas on parts being measured.

2.7 The height measuring instrument shall be able to be operated by being plugged into the laboratory receptacle or be able to be operated using a built-in rechargeable battery. Laboratory receptacle power is 120 volts, 60Hz. The height measuring instrument shall be able to operate for at least 6 hours when using the battery. The battery shall be able to be recharged by plugging the height measuring instrument into the laboratory receptacle.

2.8 The height measuring instrument shall be capable of being moved on the surface plate using the built-in pneumatic pump that will create a film of air under the instrument’s feet. The height measuring instrument shall maintain its reference when being moved on the surface plate.

2.9 The height measuring instrument’s probe shall be able to be moved up and/or down the vertical column by hand or by using the built-in motorized drive system. The motorized drive system will automatically move the probe up and/or down when triggered by selecting the appropriate key.

2.10 The height measuring instrument shall have temperature compensation that can be turned on and/or off. The temperature compensation shall allow the operator to input laboratory temperature and the coefficient of thermal expansion for the part being measured. Temperature

Rev. 3 compensation when turned on will correct for the difference between the coefficient of thermal expansion for the part being measured and the coefficient of thermal expansion for the height measuring instrument built-in electronic scale.

2.11 The height measuring instrument’s built-in electronic scale shall have a coefficient of thermal expansion within the range of 6.0 µin per inch per degree F. to 7.0 µin per inch per degree F.

2.12 The height measuring instrument shall be standardized prior to measuring perpendicularity using a precision18 inch granite square currently owned by the laboratory. The standardization process using the granite square will generate perpendicularity corrections for the height measuring instrument’s vertical column that will be applied when measuring the perpendicularity of a part.

2.13 Vertical Height Measurement Resolution: The height measuring instrument shall have multiple resolutions to include, but not limited to 0.001, 0.0001 and 0.00001 inches and their metric equivalent.

2.14 Perpendicularity Measurement Resolution: The height measuring instrument shall have multiple resolutions to include, but not limited to 0.001, 0.0001 and 0.00001 inches, degrees, minutes, seconds, and their metric equivalent.

2.15 The height measuring instrument shall measure flatness, parallelism, and internal/external diameter.

2.16 The height measuring instrument shall measure internal and external lengths between measured surfaces and/or planes.

2.17 The height measuring instrument shall measure vertical straightness.

2.18 The height measuring instrument shall measure perpendicularity of a best fit line defined by beginning and ending measurement positions.

2.19 The height measuring instrument shall include calibration instructions for calibrating the vertical height electronic scale using gage blocks. The calibration instructions shall identify all gage block sizes and the process for adjusting/aligning and updating all correction tables when the height measuring instrument calibration results exceed specification. Adjustment/alignment instructions shall be provided when using software or when inputting data via the electronic display keypad. If required, the user shall be provided all interface cables and software.

2.20 The height measuring instrument shall include instructions for cleaning the vertical electronic scale and reader head.

2.21 The height measuring instrument shall include calibration instructions for calibrating the gage head (used to measure perpendicularity) using gage blocks when interfaced to the electronic display. The calibration instructions shall identify all gage block sizes and the process for adjusting/aligning the gage head/probe to the electronic display when the gage head/probe calibration results exceed specification. Adjustment/alignment instructions shall be provided when using software or when inputting data via the electronic display keypad. If required, the user shall be provided all interface cables and software.

2.22 The height measuring instrument shall include calibration instructions and specifications for calibrating the setting block.
