B. Pile Length: The pile lengths and depths shown on the plans are approximate. The contractor shall be fully responsible for the lengths furnished for driving to obtain the specified bearing and penetration. Payment for piling will be based on a lump sum according to Division 1 Specifications. If site conditions require exceeding the depths indicated in the contract documents to meet the specified bearing and penetration requirements the Contractor shall contact the Government Contractor Officer prior to performing additional work. No measurement will be made for the length of pile destroyed when making extensions.
3.2 LOCATION OF PILES
A. The Government has field located the concrete abutment with stakes. Actual location of the concrete abutment may vary from the contract documents. From the concrete abutment the Contractor shall field located the cast-in-place steel shell pilings following the dimensions given in the contract documents. Actual locations of the pilings in relation to the shoreline may vary from the locations indicated in the contract documents.
B. The Contractor shall receive approval of pile locations from the government prior to driving piles.
C. Final position of the piles shall not be more than 1/4 inch from vertical. The maximum variation of the head of the pile from the position shown on the plans in relation to the field located concrete abutment shall not be more than two inches. Improperly driven, broken, 02350-4 or otherwise defective shells shall be removed and replaced, or otherwise corrected to the satisfaction of the Government.

A. The contractor shall furnish pile driving equipment adequate for handling the length of pile to be placed in the leads and for driving the total length of pile to the tip penetration and bearing required. Piles shall be driven with power-driven hammers, or by a combination of power-driven hammer and water jets.
Power-driven hammers are defined as hammers operated by steam, air, or diesel power. Drop hammers will not be permitted for driving permanent piling. For determining the energy per blow of diesel power hammers without a fully enclosed ram, 75 percent of the manufacturer's energy rating for the hammer will apply.
If the contractor desires to check his diesel power hammer against an approved steam hammer on a specified type of pile at a particular site, he may do so at his expense, and the checked rating of the diesel powered hammer will be used in determination of pile bearing values at that site. Diesel hammers which have a fully enclosed ram shall be equipped with a gauge and accompanying charts which evaluate the equivalent manufacturer's rated energy being produced under any driving condition.
B. Leads: Pile driver leads shall be constructed in such manner as to afford freedom of movement of the hammer, and they shall be held in alignment by guides or stiffener braces to insure support to the pile during driving. Inclined leads shall be used for the driving of battered piles.
C. Hammer Energy: The minimum energy of the hammer shall not be less than shown below.
ENERGY REQUIRED
TYPE OF PILE FOOT POUNDS, MIN
02350-5
Steel Shells for Three times weight, including Cast-in-Place mandrel if used, being driven in pounds but not less than 8,000
E. Dynamic Bearing Formulas: The following formulas will be used as a guide to determine the safe bearing value of piles.
P = 2WH . 2W *for single acting hammers.
(S+0.1) (W+w)
P = 2(0.75E) . 2W *for double acting hammers S+0.1 (W+w) and diesel powered hammers with enclosed rams and bounce pressure gauges.
P = 2(0.75E) . 2W *for all other diesel S+0.1 (W+w) powered hammers unless tested.
*The value of 2W shall be considered unity if it exceeds one. (W+w)
P = safe allowable bearing value in pounds.
W = weight of striking part of hammer in pounds.
w = weight of pile and mandrel in pounds.
H = height of fall in feet.
E = manufacturer's rated energy in foot-pounds per blow at manufacturer's rated speed, or in case of a diesel hammer equipped with a bounce pressure gauge the actual energy shown by the gauge chart.
S = average penetration in inches per blow for 10 to 20 consecutive blows.
The above formulas are applicable only if:
(a) The piles are driven in a vertical position.
(b) The hammer has an unrestricted fall.
(c) The pile head is not b roomed, crushed or
02350-6 splintered.
(d) There is no appreciable bounce of the hammer after striking the pile.
(e) The penetration is at a uniform or uniformly decreasing rate.
For piles driven to a batter, the safe bearing value of the pile shall be taken as follows:
P = 0.1 (10-m) . P B (1+m2)
P = safe allowable bearing value in pounds for batter B pile.
m = the tangent of the angle of batter.
P = safe allowable bearing value in pounds for vertical pile.
F. Splices: Extending and splicing of piles is not desirable and full length piles shall be driven wherever possible and practicable. The number of splices used shall be held to a minimum. If extensions and splices are permitted or required by the engineer, they shall be made as follows:
a. Steel piles shall be spliced by a qualified welder in accordance with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Standard Specifications for Highway and Structure Construction 2013 Edition Section
506.3.19.1. The contractor shall be fully
responsible for the adequacy of welds during driving.
3.4 CONCRETE PLACED IN STEEL SHELL PILINGS:
A. Metal pile shells shall be free from water, soil and other deleterious matter when concrete is cast in them.
02350-7
1. The contractor shall maintain on the job at all times prior to and during the filling of the shells, a mirror and light suitable for use in their inspection.
B. Curing: Polyethylene film for curing concrete shall be non-staining and securely fastened to each pile.
3.5 ANCHOR BOLTS AND EXPANSION BOLTS
A. Anchor bolts shall be set precisely with templates and maintain bolt positions during concreting operations.
Anchor bolts and expansion bolts shall be standard manufactured items intended for the use shown. Bolts, nuts, washers and appurtenant items shall be stainless steel. Bolts shall be furnished with cut washers and nuts.

This checklist serves as an assurance tool/guide in assessing safety program preparations of the contractor, and is not all-inclusive. As tasks change and new risks and hazards are introduced, you may need to address additional safeguards and corrective measures.
The contractor and subcontractor(s) must comply with all Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations applicable to the construction project, including requirements set forth within solicitation provisions and contract clauses (e.g., FAR 52.236-13 “Accident Prevention” with Alternate I and Special Provisions). It is the responsibility of the contractor/subcontractor(s) to adhere to regulations found at 29 CFR 1910, 1926, and 1928. (See page 5 for Table of Contents of OSHA Construction Safety Standards.) Each contractor/subcontractor must initiate and maintain an effective safety program that provides adequate systematic policies, procedures, and practices to protect their employees from, and allow them to recognize, job-related safety and health hazards. The program must include provisions for the systematic identification, evaluation, and prevention/control of general work s ite hazards, specific job hazards, and potential hazards that may arise from foreseeable conditions, as well as providing a competent person to conduct frequent and regular inspections. The contractor must instruct each employee to recognize and avoid unsafe conditions and the regulations applicable to the work environm ent.
The contractor will address the following items prior to and/or during the Preconstruction Conference (the Contracting
