About this file

This document is a Quick Reference Guide for the BD BACTEC™ MGIT™ Instrument (models 960 and 320), published by Becton, Dickinson and Company in April 2022. The guide provides comprehensive operational instructions for laboratory technicians and researchers using this microbiological testing instrument. It details the instrument's functionality across various aspects including icons reference, daily quality control and maintenance, routine operations, error codes, and error station resolution procedures.

The guide covers critical operational steps such as entering new MGIT and AST tubes, removing positive, negative, and completed AST tube sets, and resolving various system errors. It includes detailed tables explaining error codes (E01-E92) with their meanings and corresponding corrective actions. The document is designed to help users navigate the instrument's interface, understand status indicators, configure settings, print reports, and troubleshoot potential issues. It emphasizes the importance of referencing the full Instrument User's Manual for comprehensive operating instructions and operator safety warnings.

Entering new MGIT tubes 1 Take the new MGIT tubes to the instrument. Open the desired drawer. Select the tube entry soft key (left).

2 Scan the tube’s barcode label.

If Accession Barcoding is enabled, first the leftmost icon at left appears. Scan the tube barcode sequence number. Next, the middle icon at left appears. Scan the accession barcode. If an accession barcode is not available, select the accession barcode not available soft key (rightmost icon at left).

3 The assigned station is shown in the main body of the display. In addition, the station LEDs of the assigned station illuminates GREEN. Carefully insert the tube into the station.

4 Repeat Steps 2–3 for each of the new cultures you want to enter.

Entering new AST tubes 1 Take the AST tube sets to the instrument using the AST tube rack. Open the desired drawer. Select the tube entry soft key.

2 Scan the AST carrier’s barcode label.

If Accession Barcoding is enabled, the system expects an accession barcode to be scanned after the AST carrier barcode. Scan the accession barcode if it is available. If it is not available, select the accession barcode not available soft key.

3 To change the AST set definition, select the change AST set definition soft key. Use the ▲ or ▼ key to scroll through the available definitions for the scanned carrier size. (As you scroll, the default set is indicated by a check mark in the main body of the display.)

4 To change the isolate number, select the isolate number soft key. Use the ▲ key to increase or the ▼ key to decrease the isolate number.

5 The assigned stations of the set are shown in the main body of the display. In addition, the station LEDs of all the assigned stations for the set illuminate GREEN. Carefully insert the tube set into the indicated stations. Make sure the Growth Control tube is leftmost of the tube set.

6 Repeat Steps 2–5 for each of the AST sets you want to enter.
