The Arapaho National Forest was established in 1908 by

President Theodore Roosevelt and named for one of the Na-tive American tribes that had occupied the region for summer hunting. The Roosevelt National Forest is one of the oldest national forests in the country. It began in 1897 as part of the Medicine Bow Forest Reserve, then was renamed the

Colorado National Forest in 1910, and finally was renamed to honor President Roosevelt in 1932.

The Arapaho and Roosevelt rank among the top National

Forests for year-round recreation use, because of their near-ness to the high populations of Front Range communities, and areas of nationally known significance. In addition to a multitude of recreation opportunities, the Forests are man-aged for a variety of other public benefits. These public lands are a vital source of water, wildlife and fish habitat, wood, forage for grazing, minerals and energy. Nearly all the water for homes, industry, and irrigation along the Front Range flows from National Forest land.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) prohibits discrimina-tion in all its programs and activities on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, disability, and where applicable, sex, marital status, familial status, parental status, religion, sexual orientation, genetic information, political beliefs, reprisal, or because all or part of an individual’s income is derived from any public assistance program. (Not all prohibited bases apply to all programs.) Persons with disabilities who require alternative means for communication of program information (Braille large print, audiotape, etc.) should contact USDA’s TARGET Center at (202) 720-2600 (voice and TDD).

To file a complaint of discrimination, write to USDA, Director, Office Of Civil Rights, 1400 Independence Avenue, S.W., Washington, D.C.

20250-9410, or call (800) 795-3272 (voice) or (202) 720-6382 (TDD). USDA is an equal opportunity provider and employer.

ANGLER PARKING

Camping and Campground Reservations There are 52 campgrounds located in the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests. Many accept res-ervations and popular sites may be booked months in advance. Reservations can be made by calling 1-877-444-6777 or going online to www.recreation.

gov. There is a fee for this service. The local Forest Service office can tell you which campgrounds accept reservations, but they cannot make reservations for you.

Popular campgrounds can fill up by Thursday during the summer, al-though sites are often available at more remote locations. The camp-grounds are operated by a conces-sionaire, which is a private busi-ness under permit by the Forest Service. Campground seasons vary, contact the local Forest Service of-fice or visit online at www.fs.usda.

gov/arp for more information.

Dispersed Camping There are many undeveloped areas on National Forest land where people can camp such as pulling off the side of a road or backpack-ing. Some restrictions apply and in some cases camping may be limited to designated sites. Practice ‘leave no trace’ and check with your local Forest Service office to obtain a free copy of the Motor Vehicle Use Map and other important informa-tion.

Travel on the Forest General Information – All motorists are reminded to use extreme caution on National Forest roads as you can encounter a wide variety of other users and obstacles on roads including fallen trees, rocks, washouts, log trucks, fire engines, wildlife, hik-ers, bikers, people on horseback, motorcycles, RVs, ATVs and even snowmobiles.

This visitor map presents many travel regulations but is not the official source of accurate motor vehicle use designation of routes as is the Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM).

Please remember that forest roads present driving conditions not usually encountered on well-trav-eled highways. Please do not drive on wet, muddy roads for your safety and to prevent damage to the road.

Motorized Travel – Motorized travel (with the excep-tion of snowmobiles and other over-the-snow ve-hicles) is restricted to designated roads and trails.

All motor vehicles must be operated in compliance with the State of Colorado’s laws.

All vehicles must meet state and federal noise stan-dards. All motorcycles and ATVs shall not emit a noise level in excess of 99 dba as measured by the SAE standard 20-inch test. A spark arrester is required for motorcycles and ATVs while helmets and eye protection are recommended.

For the most complete and current information on roads and trails designated for motor vehicle use, type of vehicles allowed by route, and seasonal access, please refer to the Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM). The MVUM is the legal document that identifies designated motorized roads and trails.

The MVUMs are updated every year and are free at Forest Service offices listed on the back of this map and at www.fs.usda.gov/goto/arp/

The MVUM distinguishes between different types of allowed motorized use:

• Roadsopentoallvehicles
• Roadsopentohighwaylegalvehicles
• Trailsopentoallvehicles
• Trailsopentovehicles50”orlessinwidth
• Trailsopentomotorcyclesonly

It also identifies roads with seasonal access dates and designations on the map, and places where 300’ off-route access is allowed for dispersed camp-ing.

Travel Management Signs

Primary Roads – suitable for low-clearance vehicles, such as sedans, trailers and motor homes.

Secondary Roads – suitable for low-clear-ance, but maintained to a lower standard than primary roads.

3134-A

Portal Signs: Motor Vehicle Restriction Area – Areas where additional emphasis is needed for the Motor Vehicle Use Map key message to stay on designated routes.

Seasonal Closure Signs

– These signs, generally posted on closed gates are to inform people of the dates the route is typically open to motorized use and identify what types of non-motorized uses are allowed behind the closed gate.

ANDENDANGEREDWILDLIFE

The sign images shown below identify the different types of National Forest System routes.

This visitor map indicates seasonal access gates with a . Roads perma-nently closed to public motorized use are shown with a . Please respect closed gates and private property. Please reference the MVUM to determine where public access across private land is permitted.

The Forest Supervisor may issue rules that supplement or differ from those on this map and the MVUM. Modifications will be posted at Forest Service offices and the affected area.

Motorized Winter Travel – Cross country travel by snowmobiles, operating on at least 6” of snow, is generally allowed.

Travel is not restricted to roads and trails except where posted. Some ar-eas are closed to snowmobiles for the protection of sensitive wildlife or other reasons. These areas are identified with a on the map. Specific routes through these areas may be designated and signed open to snowmobiles. Snow-mobilers should exercise caution when traveling on snow covered roads that are still open to wheeled vehicles. Snow-mobiles are not allowed in desig-nated wilderness areas.

Your Responsibility The National Forests are public lands in joint ownership by all citizens; their management requires different laws and regulations based on local conditions. Please become familiar with re-strictions by checking with local forest offices and reading signs and bulletin boards.

It is your responsibility to be aware of the poten-tial risks and take safety precautions at all times when you visit National Forests and Grasslands.

Changing terrain and weather conditions present a wide variety of hazards. Hazards include but are not limited to: landslides; caves; falling trees or rocks; high or rushing water; contaminated water;

wild animals; severe weather; becoming lost or over-exerted; hypothermia; remnants of mining and other activities involving excavations; and exposure to unreasonable acts of other people.

If you have questions regarding the various haz-ards on the forest, please contact a district office or Forest Supervisor’s Office.

• Be aware of your surroundings. Avoid dense patches of dead trees. They can fall without warning.

• Stay out of the forest when there are strong winds that could blow down trees. If you are already in the forest when the winds kick up, head to a clearing out of reach of any potential falling trees.

• Place tents and park vehicles in areas where they will not be hit if trees fall.

• When driving in remote areas of the forest, park close to a main road, rather than on a spur or one-way section. If trees fall across the road you may be trapped.

• Bring an ax or a chainsaw to remove fallen trees from roads in case you become trapped.

• Do not rely on cell phones for safety as there is no coverage in many areas of the national forest.

• Dead trees fall down in winter as well as sum-mer, so these safety messages apply all year around.

WATCH OUT

Falling trees are always a hazard when traveling in the forest.

Non-Motorized Travel – Hikers, horseback riders, skiers and snow-shoers are allowed on most areas of the forest unless prohibited by order. Mountain bikers are encouraged to stay on roads and trails designated for mountain bike use via the appropri-ate bicycle symbol on the trail sign. In some areas off-trail use by mountain bikes is prohibited by order, as posted locally.
