About this file

This technical specification details requirements for Warm Control Valves for the Proton Improvement Plan II (PIP-II) particle accelerator project at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The specification seeks proposals for 75 control valves (25 each of three different types) to be used in the Tunnel Transfer Line (TTL) Bayonet Cans, with specific technical requirements including globe body pattern, bellows spindle seal, pneumatic diaphragm actuators, and compatibility with helium service. Key technical specifications include leak tightness standards (maximum helium leak rates), radiation resistance (1e5 Gy lifetime dose tolerance), and strict quality assurance requirements including ISO 9001 certification and compliance with ASME B31.3 standards.

The valves must be designed for indoor environments, withstand 10,000 full open-to-closed cycles, and use Siemens SIPART PS2 positioners with external analog electronics. Offerors must submit comprehensive documentation including total fabrication costs, delivery schedules, technical details, material certifications, welding procedures, and qualification documents. The valves will control helium gas flow during cooldown and warm-up of cryogenically cooled superconducting radio frequency cavities operating at extremely low temperatures (around 2K). Delivery is specified to the FNAL site in Batavia, Illinois, with detailed packaging, handling, and testing requirements outlined in the specification.

1. Introduction

The Proton Improvement Plan II (PIP-II) is a particle accelerator being built as an upgrade of FNAL accelerator complex. The accelerator includes cryogenically cooled superconducting radio frequency cavities using liquid helium (He II) at 2 K. Warm Control Valves are needed to supply room temperature helium gas to the accelerator for controlling the cooldown and warm-up rates. This specification seeks proposals for the Warm Control Valves.
