About this file

This document is a technical specification for Proton Improvement Plan II (PIP-II) Cryogenic Distribution System TTL Interconnect Expansion Joints from Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The specification details requirements for four unique axial expansion joint designs to be used in a modular Tunnel Transfer Line (TTL) that delivers cryogens at various temperature levels to an accelerator. The total required quantity is 189 expansion joints across four sizes: 108 2" bellows, 27 3" bellows, 27 10" bellows, and 27 32" bellows.

Key technical requirements include manufacturing the expansion joints from specific stainless steel grades, meeting ASME B31.3 standards, withstanding 1000 cryogenic operation cycles over 20 years, and passing rigorous testing including helium leak rate checks and pressure tests. The specification mandates detailed documentation submissions with the proposal, including total cost, technical calculations, reference drawings, design allowance details, and verification of compatibility with anchor and guide systems. Offerors must provide comprehensive technical documentation demonstrating the expansion joints' ability to handle complex thermal contraction, high-velocity flow conditions, and extreme temperature ranges from 2K to 310K.

Introduction

The Proton Improvement Plan II (PIP-II) is a particle accelerator being built as an upgrade of Fermilab accelerator complex. The accelerator includes cryogenically cooled superconducting radio frequency cavities using liquid helium. The modular Tunnel Transfer Line (TTL) delivers cryogens at various temperature levels to the accelerator. A series of interconnect axial expansion joints are needed to manage thermal contraction and allow interconnecting of the TTL modules. Four unique designs are called for in this specification.
