The chassis year of manufacture shall be the most current model year at time of response proposal submission.

Weight Balance

The apparatus design proposed shall take into account the necessity for a balanced load design. The in-service apparatus must not be heavily weighted in any axis. Front to rear axle loading shall be considered in the design to result in a smooth balanced, equally loaded axle set. Design proposals that result in too light of a rear axle load have resulted in excessive

“porpusing” resulting in unmanageable control of the vehicle, excess suspension wear, and premature failure of components. Side to side axle loading must also be considered in the design. Diagonal axis weight calculations shall also be considered to ensure appropriate weight distribution. Proposals that do not include in-service weight estimates, estimated axle loading, balance of weight in forward/rearward, side/side, and diagonal axis will not be acceptable.

The unequipped personnel weight shall be calculated at 250 lbs. per person, times the maximum number of persons to ride on the apparatus.

Axles

The chassis shall feature a 4 x 2 axle configuration consisting of a single rear drive axle with a single front steer axle.

Front Axle Gross Axle Weight Rating 20,000 pounds

Rear Axle Gross Axle Weight Rating 24,000 pounds

The above ratings are based upon the most current pumper fleet configurations of the

Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire. If the proposal includes variation in cab or body weights, the contractor shall clearly indicate the reasoning for deviation from the above listed Gross Axle

Weight Ratings.

All axles, differentials and wheel bearings shall be lubricated by synthetic oil. Front wheel bearing oil levels shall be visibly confirmed via clear inspection windows if the front axle hubs.

The rear axle external vent shall be equipped with a vent tube which routed and installed to a position by the apparatus manufacturer.

The axles shall be warranted for five (5) years from the manufacturer. A description of the warranty conditions shall be submitted with the proposal.

The rear axle ratio shall be 6.43:1.

The front axle cramp angle shall be no less than 48–degrees LEFT and 44-degrees RIGHT.

Frame

The frame shall be designed and manufactured for heavy duty service with adequate strength and capacity for all component of the intended load to be sustained and the type of service required by the PBF. The frame shall consist of double rails, positioned parallel with cross members to tie the frame together and resist twisting action imparted by dynamic road conditions. The frame members shall be in a “C” shaped design with inner liner the full length of the frame rails. The frame rails shall be a minimum of 10 ¼ inches high. The frame shall be constructed of high strength steel. Heat treated steel is not acceptable.

(0.25) inches thick. Cross members must be attached with Grade 8 zinc coated fasteners.

Additional reinforcement (0.25) inches thick, gusset plates shall be included in the mounting of the crossmembers. Bumper mounting, pump mounting, engine mounting and body mounting shall not be considered ‘cross-members”. Proposals that do not include a minimum of (7) crossmembers, mounted and reinforced as described above will not be accepted.

The frame, cross members and components shall include a lifetime warranty. The proposal shall include documentation defining the frame warranty.

The frame shall be designed to support the weight of a fully loaded apparatus, including water tank full weight. The frame shall be designed to support 100% of the load at all times. The contractor should design the apparatus with an assumption that the vehicle will be loaded with equipment, hose, water and personnel at all times.

Chassis frame designs that result in a cab floor that is not flat, are not acceptable.

The chassis frame rails shall be measured to insure the length is correct and cross checked to make sure they run parallel and are square to each other. The front and rear axles shall be laser aligned. The front tires and wheels shall be aligned and toe-in set on the front tires by the manufacturer.

The following components shall be hot dip galvanized before assembly and attachment of components:
