About this file

This is a Silvicultural Stand Summary Chart detailing prescription requirements for timber thinning operations across eight forestry units (with two designated as optional) totaling approximately 2,624 acres in the Grand Valley Ranger District of Colorado. The chart specifies detailed stand characteristics and operational prescriptions for each unit, including acreage, stem density, species composition (primarily Douglas-fir, ponderosa pine, western larch, and lodgepole pine), and cutting requirements with a uniform diameter limit of 7.0 inches dbh and consistent 15-foot by 15-foot leave tree spacing across all units.

Operational requirements include handpiling of slash throughout all units at 55-65 piles per acre with 6-foot by 6-foot pile dimensions and minimum 6-foot heights, with material bucked into 6-foot or less lengths and larger material used for down wood productivity at 5-12 tons per acre. All units have access directly adjacent to roads. The prescription mandates a minimum cutting height of 1 foot, maximum stump height of 6 inches, a tolerance of up to 25 trees per acre for Category C deficiencies (small trees between 2-8 feet height), and specific slash pullback requirements of 2 feet from road cut and fill slopes, 5 feet from culverts and trails. All piles must be located outside residual tree driplines, covered with water-repellant paper, and configured parallel and perpendicular to slope to prevent rollout. Aspen and other hardwoods are to be preserved and not cut.

Prescription Summary for all units:
Avg. Leave Tree Spacing: 15 feet x 15 feet
Minimum tree height to thin: 1 foot.
Maximum tree diameter (at DBH) to thin: 8.0 inches
Maximum stump height: 6 inches above ground, 4 inches above natural obstacles and no lower live limbs left on the stumps.
Small Tree maximum height: 2 feet.
Trees smaller than these trees but taller than the minimum tree height are required to be cut however any that are left are considered Category C deficiencies and a tolerance is allowed for leaving a small quantity on the unit. Only 25 TPA of Category C deficiencies are allowed to be left in the unit.
Minimum pull back of slash if larger than 8” diameter from road cut and fill slopes: 2 feet
culverts: 5 feet
trails: 5 feet
Roads and cut-slopes along the roadway shall remain clear of slash at all times to prevent traffic problems or water runoff problems in the ditches
Piling:
Piles shall be located outside the driplines of residual tree crowns.
Pile slash 6 inches in diameter and smaller in openings and avoid piling adjacent to or directly downhill of the leave trees.
Material shall be piled in a parallel configuration and perpendicular to the slope to reduce roll out.
Material to be piled should be bucked into 6 foot or less lengths. Material greater than 6 inches shall be limbed and bucked into 6 foot lengths with boles lying flat in contact with the ground for use as down wood for long term site productivity, in the range of 5-12 tons per acre. Limbs and tops shall be piled.
Cover piles with burnable water-repellant paper. Paper shall be placed within the pile, held firmly in place by heavy slash, and covering ¾ of the slash pile
