About this file

This is an exhibit document compiled by the Havre de Grace Public Art Committee of the Havre de Grace Arts Collective, Inc., detailing the city's public art installations and their locations within Havre de Grace, Maryland. The exhibit catalogs 21 public art installations created between 1919 and 2021, including sculptures, murals, and interactive installations distributed throughout the downtown area and Arts & Entertainment District. The installations range from historical monuments such as the War Memorial (1919, 1989) and Major General Marquis de Lafayette statue (1976) to contemporary works including the Big Fish sculpture (2019), Dream Race mural (2019), and Ernest Burke bronze statue (2021). Notable featured artists include Ezra Berger, Shawn Forton, and Thomas Sterner, with several installations commissioned by the Public Art Committee, the City of Havre de Grace, and local organizations. The document includes a detailed downtown map indicating the precise locations of each numbered installation and references to cultural institutions such as the Havre de Grace Maritime Museum, Decoy Museum, and Cultural Center at the Opera House.

The exhibit demonstrates Havre de Grace's commitment to public art as a community priority, formalized through the City Council's 2015 endorsement of a Public Art Plan. The document serves as a comprehensive reference guide acknowledging the collaborative efforts of artists, the Public Art Committee, and community organizations in establishing public art as an integral element of the city's identity. The installations reflect themes significant to the region's history, including maritime heritage, military service, local wildlife, and the city's cultural landmarks such as the historic Graw racetrack. This exhibit directly supports the related Request for Qualifications for sculptural bus shelter modification by providing context for the artistic standards, design diversity, and community engagement practices established within Havre de Grace's public art program.
