About this file

This file is an exhibit from the State of Michigan Department of Natural Resources detailing design considerations for a new fisheries research vessel. The project, identified as Proposal No. 230000000168, requires a Marine/Naval Architect to design a research vessel. The document presents three design options based on modifications to the current S/V Steelhead vessel. Option A involves converting the space below the pilot house into a lifting room connected to a wet lab, with the pilot house relocated above and external access to the wet lab roof. Option B relocates the lifting room further back toward the stern, positioning it where current bunks and galley are located on the starboard side, with the galley and pilot house relocated upward. Option C represents a conservative approach, maintaining the current S/V Steelhead design and layout with minor modifications and updated structural requirements and technology. All options address specific operational requirements including gill net lifter height optimization, crew quarters, emergency escape routes, bulkhead doors for safety, smokestack relocation, and provisions for crane and trawl winch placement on the wet lab roof.

The document specifies comparative height specifications for the gill net lifter across vessel types, noting that the current S/V Steelhead has a 3-foot roller-to-water height while other comparable vessels range from 6 to 7.5 feet. Each design option includes provisions for extended wet lab work areas with external work-up tables, storage, and bench vices beneath cantilever rooflines. The exhibit emphasizes maintaining essential crew functions including galley, living quarters, and bow berthing areas while optimizing the wet lab and lifting room configurations for operational efficiency and safety compliance.

Exhibit #1

HISTORIC DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

Option A Start with the current S/V Steelhead (SVS) design & layout and make major modifications.

Turn the space below the current pilot house into the lifting room that flows right into the wet lab. Or takes one step down if need be. Then the pilot house would be above the lifting room and in front of the wet lab roof. An external pilot house door would allow for access onto the wet lab roof to work on the crane and trawl winches if needed. Also, service as an emergency escape route if the internal pilot house stairs are unusable.

The height between the gill net lifter and the water is not ideal and should be kept to a minimum. Assuming this configuration would have a top of roller to water level of 7’+ (SVS-3’, Sturgeon-6’, Articus 7’6”, Musky ~7’) The galley and living quarters would essentially stay the same and the ceiling in the bow will be raised at least 1 foot and can be used for more living quarters or storage space. An emergency hatch with ladder would be installed in bow where the berths are located. We would still think bulkhead doors would need to be installed for safety but allowing easy access.

If possible, it would be nice to not have smokestacks in the middle of wet lab but could be convince there are not better options. The thought would be to have them located towards the sides and maybe tied into a cantilever roof line off the wet lab towards the stern of the vessel. Assuming this could structurally help support the trawl winches and crane on the roof of the wet lab as well.

With the current crane and winches potentially being relocated on the wet lab roof, there should be space to extend the wet lab towards the stern or at least have that extended roof (cantilever). Maybe under this cantilever roof could be an outside work-up table, bench vice and storage.

Option B Start with the S/V Steelhead (SVS) design & layout and make major modifications.

Relocate lifting room back further (1/3 of boat length) & closer to wet lab without sacrificing other requirements like living quarters. Lifting room would be located where the bunks and galley are located on the starboard side. Lifting room gillnet lifter to be located about first window of bunk on starboard side. The lifter would then have a workup table that ends at a hydraulic lift that directly goes up to wet lab. Top of Roller to be set 3-4’ above waterline. (SVS-3’, Sturgeon-6’, Articus 7’6”, Musky ~7’). The galley would go above this lifting room area, under the pilot house now and the pilot house would then be raised and located on top of galley. An external pilot house door would allow for access onto the wet lab roof as mentioned in option A.

The bow and the remaining space in the galley unused by the lifting room would be used as crew quarters. The bow ceiling could be raised at lease a foot from current and a bunk room escape hatch would be installed. We would still think bulkhead doors would need to be installed for safety but allowing easy access.

Same set up regarding smoke stacks, crane, trawl winch locations as mentioned in option A

Option C Take the S/V Steelhead (SVS) design and layout and make minor modifications.

If options A & B are unrealistic, same set up as the current S/V Steelhead will be acceptable. However, it is assumed that all updated structural requirements and technology will be used.
