About this file
This is a specification exhibit for replaceable cutting edges for snowplow underbody and wing blades related to a Michigan state and local contract opportunity. The specification details a curved underbody blade measuring 0.750 inches thick, 6 inches wide, and 48 inches long, featuring square holes with countersinks for #3 head plow or scraper bolts positioned at standard 6-inch intervals along the blade. The blade incorporates tungsten carbide inserts and a full-length carbide embedded strip to provide enhanced cutting performance and durability. The carbide inserts are trapezoid-shaped, measuring 1.125 inches maximum to 0.5 inches minimum in length with a nominal dimension of 0.995 inches, and must meet strict metallurgical standards including 88-89% carbide composition with 11-12% cobalt and a hardness rating of 88.2 Rockwell A.
The tungsten carbide tips must be inserted into prepared grooves using electric induction heating with brazing solder meeting specific composition requirements of 58% copper, 38% zinc minimum, and 4% each of manganese and cobalt, with a minimum bend rupture strength of 70,000 psi. The carbide inserts must be soldered on all sides except the bull nose area, with spacing between tips not exceeding 0.01 inches and a maximum height variation of 0.024 inches across the carbide edge. Additionally, a 1-inch carbide embedded strip utilizing standard 8-14 granular carbide must run the full length of the blade and remain flush with the bottom edge, with the complete carbide edge required to be flush with the steel edge to ensure proper fit and performance.
