1.2 University History
Texas A&M University-Commerce is currently the fourth-oldest state university in Texas and the third-largest university in the Texas A&M University System. Located on the northeastern edge of the Dallas- Fort Worth Metroplex, the University attracts resident students from the Metroplex and smaller communities of Northeast Texas. Texas A&M-Commerce also has satellite campuses in downtown Dallas and Mesquite. It offers courses in Corsicana and Midlothian in partnership with Navarro College and in Frisco and McKinney with Collin College. The institution remains committed to its core mission:
“Educate. Discover. Achieve.”
The history of Texas A&M University–Commerce commenced in 1889 with its establishment as East Texas Normal College (ETNC) in Cooper, Texas, by Kentucky-native William L. Mayo as a private teachers’ college. ETNC relocated to Commerce, Texas after its original campus was destroyed in a fire in July 1894.
ETNC was renamed East Texas State Normal College in 1917 after it was acquired by the State of Texas and transformed into a public college. Over the next 50 years, the University’s name changed three (3) times to reflect education specialties, graduate and doctoral programs, and branch campuses. While the student body shrank in size in the late 1970s and early 1980s, it became increasingly diverse as older nontraditional students, ethnic and racial minorities, and international student populations grew.
In 1996, East Texas State University (ETSU) was admitted into the Texas A&M University System and renamed Texas A&M University-Commerce. ETSU’s former branch campus in Texarkana was renamed Texas A&M University-Texarkana and admitted into TAMUS as a separate university.
Texas A&M University-Commerce comprises five academic colleges awarding degrees in over 100 diverse disciplines. In an environment well- suited to study and inclusion, A&M-Commerce is a place where students enjoy productive relationships with professors, become leaders on campus, and are actively involved in campus life with a choice of over 120 clubs and organizations. A&M-Commerce is an emerging Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) committed to upholding the mission of the university to diversify the student population through recruiting, retaining, and supporting all students in their common endeavor toward degree completion.
1.3 Lion Athletics History and Overview
The Texas A&M University-Commerce Lions (also TAMUC Lions and formerly East Texas State Lions and ETSU Lions) are the athletic teams that represent Texas A&M University–Commerce.
