We are looking to add two commercial Vent-a-Hoods above two residential 30” Stove/Range in a classroom at our Giddings State Juvenile Correctional Facility We will need the following:

1) Install two 48” commercial vent a hoods with fire suppression above the residential stove/cook tops.

2) The vent-a-hood will need to vent out the wall it is mounted to. (concrete CMU block wall)

3) The fire suppression system must include a manual pull.

4) The fire suppression must also shut off power to stove if activated.

5) The fire suppression system must be tied back into the existing fire alarm system.

6) Vent-a-hood should have at least one (1) light inside it.

7) Vent-a-hood should have make up air.

8) Contractor is responsible for running electrical from breaker panel and installing electrical to Vent a Hood.

9) The vent-a-hood must be tested and balanced and ready for operation.

All electrical work shall meet all State and Local codes per the NEC.

The full suppression system requirements for a culinary arts classroom, especially in environments like correctional facilities, must adhere to standards laid out in NFPA 96 and other referenced documents. Below is an overview:

Components and Standards for Fire Suppression Systems:

1. General Requirements:

- NFPA 96: NFPA 96 provides key requirements for the ventilation control and fire protection of commercial cooking operations. This applies to electric ranges, ensuring that fires are effectively suppressed and spread is mitigated. Systems must include fire-rated hoods, duct systems, and extinguishing components.

- UL 300 Compliance: Fire suppression systems for commercial cooking appliances should meet UL 300 testing standards. UL 300 ensures the system is capable of handling fires involving cooking media (e.g., grease).

- Manual Release Mechanism: The system must have a manual release as detailed in NFPA 96, Section 10.5. This allows operators to activate fire suppression manually during detected hazards [NFPA 850 (2020) 7.6.1], [NFPA 30A (2024) 9.2.5.4].

- Interlock System: Interlocks must disconnect power sources (electrical or fuel) when the suppression system activates, as specified in NFPA 96 requirements [NFPA 30A (2024) 9.2.5.4].

2. Testing and Interface:

- The fire detection components of the fire suppression system must integrate with the building’s fire alarm system for effective operation and response. Testing processes should prevent inadvertent activation of the suppression system [NFPA 72 (2025) 14.2.6 Releasing systems].

3. Design Specifics:

- Systems must use listed and appropriately sized components for the application. They should be designed and commissioned according to the manufacturer's recommendations and NFPA standards [NFPA 804 (2025) 9.6.2], [NFPA 850 (2020) 7.6.1].

Summary:

Full suppression system requirements for correctional facility culinary arts classrooms must follow NFPA 96 for commercial cooking operations, incorporate UL 300-compliant systems, and meet additional standards for inspection, maintenance, prohibited practices, and integration with fire alarm systems. Coordination with related NFPA standards ensures comprehensive fire protection coverage.

Contractors are recommended to do a site visit before placing bid. Contact Maintenance Supervisor Robbie Toland to set up site visit. (979)716-8275 Please provide bid and details of material and parts you plan to use. Giddings State Juvenile Correctional Facility is a secure facility and everyone entering will have to have an approved background check completed before they can enter.
